NEC reveals commercial grade 65-inch LCD6520 LCD
As if the 40- and 46-inch 20 series LCDs weren't impressive enough, NEC is expanding its lineup of commercial grade sets by unveiling a 65-inch behemoth. The MultiSync LCD6520 unsurprisingly checks in as the outfit's largest LCD to date, and it's also embedded with NEC's own Digital Signage Technology Suite (DSTS), which "includes more than 20 features and functions developed specifically for digital signage." Specs wise, you'll find a 1,920 x 1,080 (Full HD) resolution panel, a 2,000:1 contrast ratio, six-millisecond response time and a built-in "expansion slot" that can accept third-party gear such as a CAT5 receiver, single board computer, HD-SDI, or DVI loop-thru for a daisy chain setup. There's also inputs for HDMI, S-Video and composite, optional 15-watt speakers (available in 2008) and an optional digital tuner for the landscape model. Of course, we doubt you'll be buying one of these bad boys without writing it off as a business expense, as the $18,499.99 (LCD6520L-AV) and $19,999.99 (LCD6520P-AV) price tags will essentially shoo off the casual fans.

I hear the only issue is that when you aren't playing a tallscreen movie you'll get very very thick black bars on the top and bottom
Engadget shows the LCD6520P-AV version in this picture. If you go to their website you can view the LCD6520L-AV, which is the standard widescreen version. Here is a link for that one: http://www.necdisplay.com/Products/DigitalMediaLibrary/Downloads/?product=1232f009-73dd-4844-9eb3-8537750a321b The only problem I see is that it is only 2,000:1 contrast ratio. I mean really, with a 65" screen, your going to notice the crappy blacks. My 46" Samsung 1080p LCD has 10,000:1. These guys really need to step it up before I write this off as a "business expense".
Your Samsung has a 10000:1 DYNAMIC contrast ratio, which is purely meaningless. That NEC display has a 2000:1 STATIC contrast ratio. It most likely looks better than your Samsung.
I wish more companies would make large screen lcds instead of lcdtvs to drive costs down. I mean I paid $3000 for my smasung lnt4671 and its filled with useless components I dont want or need (standard def hook-ups, 2 component, 3 hdmis (I only need 1), optical out, qam tuner, atsc tuner etc etc. I feel I could of saved big if they made the same quality display without all those "TV" components as I only need my display for using my htpc.
LCD displays suck and the picture quality is the worst, even worse than CRT. Crushed blacks (nearly no shadow detail) and muddy dark grey for blacks...horrible for viewing in the dark.
Plasma displays are far superior - particularily Pioneer's Kuro line of plasmas which have a true 15,000:1 STATIC contrast ratio. Blows away any and all flat panels on the market including these crappy overpriced NEC LCDs and those from Samsung and Sony.
Contrast ratio actually needs to be specified using ANSI or other standardized testing method, otherwise it's just meaningless. I think even ANSI might be fudgeable.
"Dynamic" contrast is one where the backlight is dimmed for dark scenes, and that really screws things up, so your black level is all over the place depending on the white level required in a given frame, and the backlight is probably always lagging anyway when it does that.
HDpurist,
Actually the Kuro HDTVs have been measured at slightly above a 3000:1 ANSI static contrast, which is still the highest ever tested. Sony's XBR4 LCD actually measure pretty high--somewhere right around above 2000:1. I think the Samsung 81 series is in second place though.
