(Guess I'm just a Joe Six-Pack now, eh?) If BD players ever get to the sub-$200 range, I'll be grabbing one of those, too. But now that I have a high def player, I'm going to use it! However, I will be more than happy to mutter a few choice words under my breath to you and h4ldol as the HP HD DVD gift set crosses the barcode scanner. Oh, by all means please DO forgive me if I would rather spend the $400 difference between a Wal-Mart, fire sale HD DVD and a decent PS3 on something other than a PS3. I think it means we are more careful with money and don't jump at the opportunity to buy a $500 player than a few years from now is not 100% sure to be supported. I have all the best High Def TV and Audio gear I could afford (as a college student) and I wanted to take it the next step by going to HD Media. HD-DVD at $99 was an easy first step in. And actually, I think us "Joe-six pack" people are much more willing to purchase disks, because they only spent $99, thats almost $400 in DVDs had we Bought Blu-Ray. So how about we change this view to people who don't want to waste their hard earned money on what could become a doorstop. I'm certainly not implying that everyone who shops at Walmart is a "hobo" – what I'm saying is that a player sold at $99. is more likely to be an impulse purchase. Or perhaps more likely, a second player, and I don't see that shifting the balance on more copies sold of a particular title in the grand scheme of things. No one on this forum is representative of the public at large, so I don't see the anecdotes here representing the masses, and isn't that what we're trying to predict? The actions of the masses? Allegations of class warfare and elitism on my part are baseless. I haven't commented in weeks but next time I'll be sure to be less flip about it. And for the record, I would have purchased the cheaper player if it was the one I wanted. That is the downfall of HD DVD, and why the massive walmart firesale of noisy, clunky 1080i cheapies will not have the hoped for effect of increasing HDM sales to narrow the embarrassingly wide gap between blu-ray and HD DVD. You all know this to be true, you are just unwilling to accept it. With Warner's blu-ray exclusivity announcement forthcoming at the 2008 CES in January, it's no surprise that HD DVD fanboys are in such a panic these days. Hey, I'm dual-format, but I look forward to the day when HDM becomes unified and hence, strengthened and its prospects brightened, by the adoption of a single and superior format... blu-ray of course.

h4ldol

Comments on HD DVD and Blu-ray releases on December 11th, 2007

we will see wont we.

Anthony Butler

Comments on HD DVD and Blu-ray releases on December 11th, 2007

"With Warner's blu-ray exclusivity announcement forthcoming at the 2008 CES in January, it's no surprise that HD DVD fanboys are in such a panic these days."

Strange, I read rumors they are going HD DVD exclusive.

I bet they release how HP out sold 300 as the top selling HD movie and supporting both formats is the way all studios should go. Never mind that the HD DVD has an entire online component that the Blu-ray can't yet implement, with features such as mobile downloads and user-organized live screenings. Never mind that you could watch the entire HD DVD with pop-up actor-commentary windows on screen—if Warner had implemented this in the Harry Potter Blu-ray, it would have been compatible with exactly one currently shipping Blu-ray player.

The surprising thing was, even when you compared the exact same experiences, the HD DVD behaved much better. Every so often an icon appears in the top left corner of the screen, indicating a behind-the-scenes featurette about that particular scene. On the HD DVD, you click it, watch what you want to, then click Enter again to return to the point you left off in the main movie. With the Blu-ray, the system had no way of returning you to the movie; it could only dump you in the featurette menu, where you were stuck watching more of those. Sure, these problems could be Warner's programmers, and not a format issue, but Warner is going for as similar an experience on both, and it clearly can't do everything on Blu-ray that it can on HD DVD.
