Kevin - I don't think you can reasonably expect to see any blu ray hardware manufacturer stop making stand alone blu ray-only players at this point in the game. Unless I've missed something, Samsung has not announced that it will only make dual-format players going forward, and I don't recall hearing any other manufacturers make similar claims. Nor have a read anything that suggests that they are losing money. In fact, I've read the opposite. That's why, other than the PS3, blu ray players have been priced so high (they aren't being subsidized).

The price reductions are exactly what you would expect to see over time. By this time next year, there will be little difference, if any, in the prices of HD-DVD and Blu Ray players. I have no problem with the initial report a few days ago -- but to say, "Now the retailer has it for $20 less than we said a few days ago!!!" isn't really news...

I didn't see a post about the Venturer HD DVD players going from $199.98 to $190... And I wouldn't expect to. Make an initial point and move on unless it drops significantly. Less than 10% off the previous price is not significant, IMHO.

Great move for Samsung, p[robably preparing the arrival of a 1.1, and just as I predicted the BDA is preparing its move into mass market at the beginning of '08.

Be prepared for 1080p Blu Ray players around $200 shortly in Q1 '08 (profile 1.0), and new models at around $300-$400 with profile 1.1/2.0 shortly thereafter.
By mid 08 you'll have those 1.1/2.0 Blu Ray players around $200 and nowhere left to run for Toshiba except in the bargain bins of Walgreens ;)

By Xmas 08, you'll have decent 1080p Blu Ray players for sub $200, mark my word (but the anouncements of CES 2008 will have shifted the market to Blu for good by then anyway).

Last, for the "Sony" obsessed. You should check out waht the BDA is comprised of. Most of the CE in there have patents with Blu Ray, Panasonic (Matsushita) even moreso than Sony.

Being in the optical media replication industry, and knowing the process changes that must be implemented in order to replicate bluray media, I don't know how they can afford to lower their price point on media. You forgot to add internet connectivity, but you're right. Why would anyone looking for a bargain care about PIP, 1080i, so called lossless audio and probably unbeknown to them, meet Profile 2.0 standards? It's a $99 HD-DVD player! And despite some drawbacks, does more than its market competitor. That sure will be fine with the bargain hunter, especially if it has to compare to a $270 Blu-Ray. Wow, now the bargain hunter has $170 more to spend on...oh, I dunno, WHATEVER!

Go to AVS Forums and READ what INSIDERS who actually DEAL with replicators and REPLICATORS themselves have to say. Don't be a numbnut. Blu-Ray discs are more expensive to MAKE, that's why HD DVD combo disc with all the bells and whistles costs the same as regular Blu Ray disc.

Blu-Ray yield rate on BD50 are about 60-70% on HD DVD HD30 they are 95%, Blu-Ray media requires more additional costs due to coating and other crap, and requires significant investment in replication equipment.
