Hmmm... $300 entry-level Sony blu-ray player. $400 profile 1.1 PS3... things don't look good for HD DVD. Hello, Warner!
Now pay attention how many Blu-Ray tools start cheering up extras LOL.. as soon as the only valid Blu-ray player, a game console, gets an update to support that what HD DVD has been supporting from the start you will see these Blu-bots thumping their chest and suddenly the extras will be the most important thing in the world..
You can bet on it..
Nfinity:
What don't you get? The blu-ray demographic doesn't care about this as a primary method of marketing, it's a supplement feature(s) which will add on to the other benefits of owning blu-ray. It's almost like blu bashing on HD-DVD when they go TL51 on the market, and a blu guy would go "yeah, we've had that for quite sometime".
Get over it, be happy your format has this and it works for you, and now it opened another door for blu-ray. It seems there's alwasys someone on the opposing side (whether it's red or blu) to find a way to take away the spotlight of a feature trying to educate or instate the condescending tone of what hd-dvd already has. give it a break, this isn't about HD-DVD politics, this is about an update for blu-ray.
Save your boasting for hd-dvd vs. blu-ray topics, this isn't one of them.
thanks
Great to have this update on the best gaming console out there.
Blu-ray is already slaughtering HD DVD ... this is just gravy.
The future is Blu :)
bs, since when is the ps3 a gaming console?
BBG you always gotta add your blu-ray advertisement tagline? i hope you're getting paid for this, i swear
Nfinity, I couldn't agree with you more about the special features. It has saddened me, that as a supporter of both HD-DVD and Blu-ray, how lackluster the special features are.
HD-DVD has all their special features in SD with crappy 'interactive' features like online polls.
Sadly, Blu-ray has been pretty much absent on any special features. I've felt like they're Super-Superbits. However, Order of the Phoenix and LOST have all of their special features in HD and LOST even has extra content not found on the DVD.
Times, they are a changin'
Yeah!
Updated both this morning, and WOW, what a day for Playstation owners.
There is also plenty of unmentioned tweaks on the PS3 update, like a new earth visualization in the media player, that's really cool.
The PSP radio player is Shoutcast and Icecast based, so picks up stacks of content, and works really well.
7Million Profile 1.1 compliant Blu-ray players. Nice.. With Warner cancelling/delaying all their HD DVD releases, and budget Blu-ray players like the Sony BDP-S300 for $270 it really does not look good at this moment for HD DVD.
thanks
Great...so now i have a profile 1.1 player that can do commentary while i'm in the movie (like i'm ever gonna use that shit). I guess its always nice to say i have it, but then again i'm sure there are people who will be drooling over it.
@Nfinity
Nice to see you chiming in with your predictable rant on game consoles.
Just waiting for Truth Teller to add his moan to the piece now.
Quick! To the Harry Potter interactive community room to muster your troops!
Since games like Resistance, Motorstorm, Warhawk, Ratchet & Clank Future, and Uncharted launched?
Yeah, what a day for PS3 owners.
LMAO.
No profile 1.1 discs to play on it.
Amazing.
It'll be interesting to see just how big a rush there is for these or whether they cause the other relative handful of Blu-ray standalone owners problems or whether they even care if it does.
(which puts all the 'concern' from the Blu-gang & their whining about whether 51gb TL HD DVD discs will or will not work on 1st gen HD DVD players into perspective)
BTW D@n the only sad sacks I've ever seen packing forums to skew discussions or polls are those Blu-ray.com idiot fanboy to$$ers.
Grow up little girl
And your point? I'll be picking up a copy of Sunshine as soon as it comes out. When are you getting yours? Oh... sorry, you can't!
Hmm - I updated last night and saw no mention of 1.1 in the notes regarding what features were upgraded. I did see DivX and WMP but NO 1.1.
@Wryker
It's in there. I was mentioned in the release notes. Also, look in the movie section on the PS3 dashboard, you should now see an icon that says "BD Data Utility"... that's part of the 1.1 stuff.
"With Warner cancelling/delaying all their HD DVD releases"
Another instance of a Blu-ray supporter taking the BDA's lead and blatantly making things up in order to make Blu seem better. The facts alone can't do it, so let's just LIE!
The fact is, Warner has not delayed or canceled any HD DVD title without delaying or canceling its Blu-ray counterpart.
Maybe the Blu boys are just worried Warner has already confirmed its participation at the HD DVD press conference at CES next month.
Make no mistake, DTS-HD Master Audio internal decoding is more important at this time then Profile 1.1. This is looking more and more like a PS3 format then anything. On a brighter note, I enjoyed Pixar movies on BD last night, they were, exquisite.
Just point to the score ... Blu-ray has more then double the sales of HD DVD in the US ... even more world wide.
There's no disputing this ... that's why HD DVD supporters are so frustrated ... and so angry.
Blu-ray has won all of the major holiday seasons, and always by a landslide ... I believe black-friday was 70% Blu-ray.
Simply put, in 2007 Blu-ray has thrived while HD DVD has been devastated.
The future is Blu :)
"Great to have this update on the best gaming console out there."
That will be the funniest thing I read all week.
From "Truth"
"BTW D@n the only sad sacks I've ever seen packing forums to skew discussions or polls are those Blu-ray.com idiot fanboy to$$ers."
Always makes me smile when "Teller" starts insulting people around, always the sign of a desperate man.
Profile 1.1 doesn't mean much to me, I've never been a person to dive in bonuses for long if at all. But some people value the IME feature, and starting early January we'll have some very nice releases among which Resident Evil III: Extinction and Sunshine with this feature.
According to Warner, they were specifically waiting for that feature to offer similar experience to viewers compared to the HD DVD versions of The Matrix and Batman Begins. Good times coming on Blu Ray :)
Oh, and it's always one less (of the very few) thing the HD DVDers can still brag about, which is always nice :)
Oh, Makes the PS3 2.0 compliant by default as well btw (with the Wireless network updates - even if officially the "2.0 switch" hasn't been turned on - more to come in January with BD Live).
Let me know, is your HD DVD player Wi Fi Wireless out of the box ? :)
That's a really stupid limitation being placed on it with 2GB files, for a high definition console the only divx files/movies you could play on it under that size wouldn't/couldn't even be HD (or would be so low bit-rate they'd look no better than SD).
Also, without the net connection involved, it's still all just a glorified 'interactive CD' really anyways.
It's certainly nothing on iHD.
Had to laugh at the inclusion of WMV/VC-1 support (tho I've already seen people complaining that it doesn't work right - no DTS HD either).

========================
Pathetic.
perhaps you ought to take Greg's advice "insulting people..... always the sign of a desperate man".
I've never yet taken a personal bash at anyone here and I have no intention of ever doing so
(tho I do think the laughable idiot kiddies at Blu-ray.com are fair game - even Sony are embarrassed by them and the Frankenstein they helped create).
"perhaps you ought to take Greg's advice "insulting people..... always the sign of a desperate man"."
Very profound. Especially when we read this previous comment.
"BTW D@n the only sad sacks I've ever seen packing forums to skew discussions or polls are those Blu-ray.com idiot fanboy to$$ers."
You're a hypocrite. Your rants are like those of a whiny 8 year girl. HD DVD (that thing which you love so dearly) deserves better that your paranoid and ill-formed remarks so grow up.
The difference being that I know a couple of people at Sony.
It is true, actually, that they do find the idiot children at Blu-ray.com to be an embarrassing annoyance who make their jobs harder because of the misinformation they spread as if it were fact.
"grow up" yourself.
Truth Teller,
Blu-ray.com is an obvious target because it's a source for BD and it hosts open forums. There are "idiots" everywhere, even in AVS forums.
But you're right, the idiots on both sides fuel nonsense arguments that get us all stirred up.
Sony delivers the Christmas gift of the electronic world! No more converting from DIVX, now beautiful seamless playback.
It will be a very Happy New Year thanks to Sony!

And. So. What.
I have it already on SD DVD.
I might pick up a rip when it appears on the net too.
I may even buy it when it comes to HD DVD (thanks to Fox's German publisher whop is HD DVD, Highlight)
In fact I have a stack more movies to choose from seeing as how HD DVD is region-free everytime & can be sourced safely from anywhere.
Thanks to importing it means
HD DVD has the largest amount of available movie content and
HD DVD has the largest amount of exclusive movie content.
But thanks for your concern.
I personally think this BD HDDVD argument and therefore contention therefore market rivalry is a GOOD thing. BD players get cheaper then HDDVD players get cheaper and so on and so forth. Until the day when BD AND HDDVD developers have a higher market share than DVD and thus another format is superceded(pardon my english :)). This has happened before and will happen again; VHS and Betamax come to mind. Keep in mind though that Betamax was the loser, a Sony product. Minidisk also comes to mind (and yes I do know that minidisk still has widespread use in the corporate world) never making a significant dent in the Music industry.
Just my two cents :)
Peace
Haha! Sad how you have to scrounge around to other countries to tally up titles for your HD DVD total. Sorry fanboy, but here in the US, Blu-ray actually has more titles.

THANKS FOR YOUR CONCERN! :P

......and why should I care less about how Blu-ray have rigged the US market?
I'm in the UK. :P
Nevertheless even US HD DVD owners know all about importing so tough luck sunshine, thanks to easy importing these days (and some shops are happy to do it for you) HD DVD does indeed offer the most movies and the most exclusive movies.
So much for you trying to bait me about you getting movies I can't.
Such laughable nonsense.
Blu-ray hasn't got a single 'advantage'.
That's why analysts have all backed away from their early 'it'll be an easy Blu-ray win' predictions.
That's why even Blu-ray BS supremo Stringer himself now predicts a stalemate (even if he did try & back-track on that later).
Only the Blu-ray fanboys are now left abandoned to their fantasy of an easy Blu-ray win.
But you go ahead & enjoy your mutual back-slapping, k?
It'll be all over before you know it.
Well, John Dvorak and Reuters say it's over. It was to be expected, from a hardware point of view. No matter what they did, HD DVD would always have less storage capacity than BD DVD. So, the BDs would appeal to a larger market, since the PC crowd is always looking for larger removable media. And a potential 100 GB disc (BD) is always appealing for backing up my hard drive. So, BD as hardware always had more future than HD. In the software side, it doesn't matter. Many people just plain skip the extras, no matter how cool they are.
