It'll be interesting to see if it has other firmware upgrades or if it's simply a manufacturing problem.

h4ldol

Comments on Amazon pushes BD-UP5000 release date back to February

Hopefully they are going to ship it profile 1.1 ready? I snapped it up and am finding it to perform much better than I ever expected. Great picture and sound and think that any manufacturer not planning a Dual format player will be missing a huge market opportunity. Dual format PC drives (remember DVD+R only drives for example?) set the neutrality standard and now all manufactuers make em. Long live both HD-DVD AND Blue Ray, together in one player!! Now if we can only get this type of peace among our collective humanity...

Hockey Dave

Comments on Amazon pushes BD-UP5000 release date back to February

There's a demo unit on display at my Best Buy, but they say it'll be a few weeks before they have one to sell.

TJ

Comments on Amazon pushes BD-UP5000 release date back to February

I heard that Best Buy had one per store in Michigan. I checked out a store here in Louisiana last week and found one lone player on a shelf away from the main dvd/blu-ray/hd-dvd player section. There was no price or anything on it. I've been following the AVS thread and many are very happy. For me it's nice because my receiver does not have HDMI, but it's a Denon with 7.1 analog inputs, and there has been a promised firmware upgrade for Dolby True and DTS master, in fact, they announced way back it will be released with a firmware upgrade for that shortly after.

I do have the feeling they are going to make some modifications to this unit, and quite possibly, the units they sent out gave them some good feedback before the bigger release of the unit. Heck, if they improve anything, I'm ok with waiting. It's just that this is the 3rd delay and I want one.

mntwister

Comments on Amazon pushes BD-UP5000 release date back to February

In the Best Buy I work at in the Bay Area our district warehouse has 0, and only 3 of the 10 had 1 for sale. So I don't find it hard to believe. All our store got was one 5000 and sold it the day it was shipped to us. Very strange that we got 1 then we can't order any more nor can any Best Buy Between San Francisco and San Jose order one.

Andres

Comments on Amazon pushes BD-UP5000 release date back to February

1 used & new available from $759.00 ...

LOL!

Music Pirate

Comments on Amazon pushes BD-UP5000 release date back to February

Still holding out for the mass market combo players/recorders.

horngreen

Comments on Amazon pushes BD-UP5000 release date back to February

What would you record on a hi-def disk recorder, horngreen? Cable and satelite HD providers encrypt their signals to force you to use their DVRs, where their content can remain safely locked away from others. (OK Dish allows you to download content from their DVRs to a PocketDish which they'll sell you.)

Now the broadcast networks don't encrypt their over-the-air HD signals, so if you want you can record that. But what method to use?

A DVR (with monthly fee)? A brutally expensive HD-DVD recorder (starting at over $1,300?)

Try a D-VHS deck. Pricey for a VCR these days at $400~$600, but it can record digital broadcasts flawlessly onto D-VHS tapes, including HD up to 1080i, and is backwards compatible with regular VHS and SuperVHS. HDMI out, upconverts, and you need something to play your old VHS tapes on your HD rig.

Leo

Comments on Amazon pushes BD-UP5000 release date back to February

I got mine on December 18, at a Best Buy in suburban Detroit, Michigan.
