Buy a 1080p BRAVIA and Sony Australia will toss in a PS3 for free

It looks like we're going to have to postpone our move to South Korea momentarily as we jet over to Australia and clean 'em out of PS3s. Sony Australia is giving away a free 40GB PS3 with every 1080p TV purchase in the XBR, X or W BRAVIA series of LCDs. The 40-inch W series starts at AU$2,999, while the 40GB PS3 retails for $699 kangaroo bucks, so it really is a hefty discount. Who's to say if this is a desperate move by Sony to sell more TVs, PS3s, PS3 games or Blu-ray discs, but whatever the reason we're not complaining. The offer lasts until January 28th.

Look at it this way-- buy from amazon and the 40w3000 is 1679.00, which comes to 1,916 AU. So its not that great of a deal to buy direct from sony.

The TV doesn't have to be bought directly from Sony, it can be bought from any authorised Sony retailer. Look at it this way - you get a HDTV for the best price you can negotiate AND you get a PS3 as well. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Sony US has a similar promotion for the last few months. Buy an HDNA TV using your Sony Points (Sony Card is required) and get a free PS3. Unfortunately it requires you to spend $300,000 on Sony card (less if Sony merchandise was purchased, which counts as several points per dollar). Also, as Locke correctly points out, price difference with Amazon is such that one can by from Amazon, get PS3 and still be better off in the end

Desperation is when a company employs firesale tactics in order to survive a format "war" that it is losing, and losing big-time. When Sony, which has an even more dominating lead in Australia than in the U.S., to the tune of 6:1 HDM sales, makes this sort of move, it is clearly strategic and not a last gasp to survive at any cost. A grab at the jugular, so to speak, to finally put HD DVD out of its misery after months of declining sales and market share. Japan is already 9:1 blu-ray over HD DVD, and Europe will be next, currently at 4:1 sales advantage. The U.S., sadly, is the slowest to follow (no doubt secondary to Walmart's now infamous firesale of 1080i cheapies and the "Joe 6-pack effect"), but it shouldn't take more than another quarter or two now that Warner will be hopping aboard soon. Hello Warner. Adios HD DVD... you tried your best, but now it's time to step aside for the blu-ray juggernaut.

Sony prices are so inflated, they'll still make a large profit after throwing in a PS3.
