It is real easy to look just go to the http://charts.highdefdigest.com/history.aspx

Select the appropriate movie comparison and look at the charts....HDDVD was ahead for HPOOP but then blu-ray overtook it and stayed there until the BOGO which no doubt generated more sales (even though it was not part of the BOGO). It is easy to see, but hardly indicative of the overall sales trends. The article you refer to only cites Amazon sales rankings and by the time the article was published, blu-ray over took HDDVD. However, if you look at the Gift set, bluray lead HDDVD and stayed there....and not surprising, HDDVD sales of the gift set drop off even more when the BOGO started...

So until real hard data is presented, the article you ref'd was just teasing you...

JimC

Comments on Amazon BOGO excels HD movies to number one for the first time ever

@Nfinity

If the Blu-ray BOGOs included the first 4 HP, or even just Pirates, Live free, Ratatouille or whatever other new big hit on Blu, I'm sure the TOP 10 DVDs on Amazon would have had Blu-rays in the first 8 positions... Now, the Blu side needs to come up with a $100-150 player that can compete with Toshiba's. Sure, Toshiba's aren't full 1080p like most, if not all, Blu-Ray players are. But, for the most part, people are buying the 720p tv sets because the 1080p cost 3x more sometimes. And, so far, HD-DVD offers a cheaper manufacturing process, for the media, and cheaper players, for the consumers. I know that Blu-Ray offers higher bandwidth and storage than HD-DVD. But, Betamax was a great format too that didn't catch up with the consumer market due to its high cost as well. Is Blu-Ray due to follow the path of Betamax, and to a lesser degree UMD? I hope not. But, unless Sony, and BDA, come up with some way to lower their prices, I'm afraid Blu-Ray may go the Betamax route. It may not be the death of Blu, because VHS didn't kill Beta either. Beta and all its incarnations became the chosen format for video professionals. But, that's peanuts in comparison to the consumer market.

Mr Bobby

Comments on Amazon BOGO excels HD movies to number one for the first time ever

The one thing about the "no 1080p on the HD-A3", HD-DVD sux" argument is that unless you're running 1080p/24, which a large number of sets don't support, there is *no* difference between 1080p and 1080i if your TV does proper deinterlacing (which 90% of the LCDs currently on the market do). I concluded that it simply wasn't worth another $100 to get 1080p/24 (the price delta between the A3 and the A30) at the time) and I suspect many more made the same decision. Believe it or not, it's rare to see a Blu supporter make sense! In the same way, this could just be a fluke for HD. The boon of HD could also be its bane- people who waited until the players became cheap may not be willing to drop big dollars on HD movies they may be OK with buying on DVD. Instead of saying that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on HD DVD was selling slightly below its Blu-ray version at a 45 to 55 ratio, I went all dyslexic and inverted the numbers to say HD DVD was actually outpacing Blu-ray at a 55 to 45 ratio. That was wrong. Or WRONG!!!!! according to the dozens of emails I got from pretty pissed-off readers. It has since been corrected. I do agree that I was careless, probably stupidly careless, for making that error. But I'm not sure if it merited the sort of 'extreme enthusiasm' it generated.
Even with the error, the basic gist of the story should still stand. According to Universal, who used the latest Nielsen/VideoScan research, Order of the Phoenix is showing unusual strength on HD DVD versus the general trend of BD outselling HD DVD counterparts by a much wider ratios of 2 to 1 or 3 to 1."

kcmurphy88

Comments on Amazon BOGO excels HD movies to number one for the first time ever

Wow I'm shocked.
