I see the demise of all physical media based movies, not just DVD. I know that I will NEVER buy Bluray OR HD DVD. I also know that ALL of my friends feel the same way, and all of our clients do as well. (For the bean counters out there... that's thousands of people in my circle alone that will never touch B/HD DVDs). We stay away for one simple reason, the increased quality received from HDM is not enough to justify the need to purchase TWO seperate players or an expensive dual format player that would be required to maintain compatibility and allow us to watch any movie, and for a big chunk of my client base, with me included, would have to find a media center compatible dual format high capacity changer. We will stick with DVDs until streaming media becomes the norm, and I feel that will be sooner rather than later. Both the bluray and HD DVD camps decided to screw the consumer so I say screw them. Streaming media will be king, and I am it's humble subject, the other formats can just die for all I care.
LMAO! Physical media will be around for a very very very long time. You keep waiting for your streaming HD content, I'll enjoy my movies in all of their HD glory RIGHT NOW on my HD-DVD player. The players are so cheap right now, it's just silly to wait for streaming media, which MAY happen one day, but it won't be for a very long time.
I am a gadget geek and have been in the technology field for almost 10 years now. I am on the fence about digital medium. I still buy CDs, DVDs and HDM media because I want to physically own it. I just don't feel totally comfortable with all my music, pictures and movies on a hard drive that is expected to fail (most companies only have a 1 year warranty, Seagate has 5, which is why I buy them). On top of that, my 2 TB is almost full, so space is a concern.
Sure, I have converted my CDs to MP3s and done my share of downloading them. I just feel better about having the CD around. I setup a 2 TB NAS in a RAID 5 configuration, figuring I would be pretty safe. I know it isn't 100%, that you can't just count on redundancy, but I couldn't justify a backup solution for 2 TB. I got bit in the ass by the choice, as I had an issue with 2 drives and all my data was gone, music, pictures and movies. luckily, most of the music I owned on CD, the pictures I backup for that very reason, but the movies were long gone.
I have since fixed the issue and have my 2 TB NAS up and running again, however I still don't have a backup solution and will not have one for some time if ever. It is just a risk I am forced to take due to costs.
I just don't think digital downloads are ready for the prime time and won't be for a while.
“While it's not exactly punching it out with the heavyweights in multi-room audio, the Mint Studio does certainly hold its own with many similarly-priced iPod docks out there.”

you say this on the very day that Wal-Mart gets out of the movie download business...yeah, that's definitely taking over any day now
