The story goes that Warner's priority was to force a win for one format, and one option was being worked on that would see Warner and Fox go HD DVD exclusive. Fox wouldn't switch sides, so Warner took the other option and went with Blu. None of that is confirmed, but it indicates just how close this race was until yesterday. Like how I live in America and we have inbred hicks that celebrate the socalled "war on terror in IRAQ". While they're just jaded by what they're told is good for them.

Bottom line is Blu Ray is bad news for the consumer, but the fact that it came in a Playstation unknowing Joes took it in. Its funny how many Playstation owners have technical backgrounds?

Okay lets see BR has a higher capacity than HD DVD, GREAT! Now lets do some simple equations, DRM= Buggy, Region Coding= Locked, hardware with spreadsheet standards= Misleading, yeah you can get a cheap BR deck for under 300.00usd but it has less support features that a 195.00 HD DVD deck, BDJ= unproven and underdeveloped hence Warner never releasing The Matrix or Batman Begins, now that this has happened with Warner, you can expect to see those hardware prices stay high for a while.

As for why people think HD DVD= M$ is still beyond me. I guess because Michael Bay said so? Or because the Playstation ACTUALLY did = Blu Ray so gamers thought M$= Xbox 360 which would HAVE to= HD DVD? Lets clear the air for a second M$ backed or maybe even still backs HD DVD (unless they announce support for Blu Ray and a 360 BR add on @ CES?) but understand this people if HD DVD= M$ you'd have an Xbox 360 with built in HD DVD two years ago. Yeah HD DVD uses HDi which = M$ but fanboys seem to be like drunken soccer fans they just want to fight and dont understand why.

I support HD DVD but will admit it bought Paramount and Dreamworks. Warner stating "it wasnt a bidding war" is a pretty tall tale. This being the same company that was going to produce hybrid combo disc, which "delayed til 08". Yeah if they didnt take some form of a payoff (money, stocks, incentives, hell even big screen TVs) then my friends they're the most ethical company in the history of mankind and God bless them!

If HD DVD some how holds Universal which depends on their financial arrangements as well as Paramount/Dreamworks, maybe they can pull a rabbit out of the hat? Hey maybe I'll be President of the United States? The only possible comeback is something like Disney leaving BR which is like seeing Elvis Presley and Tupac Shakur having breakfast at Dennys on a Sunday morning.

Yeah I'm let down, I feel the consumer (mainly me) got screwed, but this is business and I can understand that and accept that, but I refuse to be ignorant to the facts. I close by saying this, you might not see 500 million dollars in Sony's annual reports they're too smart for that, but you might want to check the BDA's AMEX black card bill.

misterhearn

Comments on Is New Line going Blu-ray exclusive, too?

I don't want this to get off topic but you're an idiot and know nothing about foreign policy. I have the xbox 360 with hd-dvd addon, and I also have a PS3 (got it mainly as a blu-ray player). This upsets me b/c it's obviously not the consumer chosen format, and it's just not going to be good for the consumer at all. Shit the blu-ray format isn't even finished yet! There are still new profile players and disc! WTF kind of bullshit is that? it's been more than 2 years since initial release and the final format is still not finished!?! I'm still perplexed that some people think blu-ray is a higher quality format than hd-dvd simply because of storage space on the disc and the player cost twice as much as a hd-dvd player.

But I guess if I was Warner I would have to accept a 500 million dollar pay off as well. To bad Toshiba couldn't afford to spend that much. I wonder how Sony was able to afford that as PS3 sales have caused their financial statements not to look so hot. Oh wait the article says it was a payoff from the BDA. Wonder where they got the money? Well do you really think those Blu-ray players actually cost twice as much as an hd-dvd player to make?

And now because of a couple of tools we have to accept the "superior" more expensive, DRM filled twice as much (because we don't trust our consumers) Blu-ray format.

WASD John

Comments on Is New Line going Blu-ray exclusive, too?

"This upsets me b/c it's obviously not the consumer chosen format"

Of course not, but neither is HD DVD. And if we count sales as votes, well Blu has been ahead all year...attach rates be damned. You voted too buddy, with that PS3 of yours. Perhaps you should have adopted Truth Teller's mania of death before Blu.

Paramount took money; Warner took money. The only difference is that Warner's money was icing for a strategic cake. I don't think it's a big deal having a few more "gigas" of memory or storage space on HD DVD when you can have reference quality audio like Dolby Digital Plus. From what I've heard and read on the web, boo-ray actually only has regular Dolby Digital and not the "plus" variety and that's why it doesn't have reference quality audio like HD DVD does on Transformers and Shrek the Third. Those two movies were the two biggest blockbusters in the world last summer and after Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, it was my fav flicks of the year. Harry Potter is the best of course! I'm gonna buy all five of them on HD DVD and I hope that Warner will switch back to neutrality so that we can get the complete set on HD DVD, which is at least as good as boo-ray. Maybe even better! Guys, be open minded like me and support HD DVD, thanks!

haldol

Comments on Is New Line going Blu-ray exclusive, too?

You're not really serious are you?

"reference quality audio like Dolby Digital Plus"? I guess I have to buy a PS3 because there are only 1 or 2 other blu-ray players that can play profile 1.1. I'm not upset at hd-dvd format losing so much as being forced into an unfinished format with players that are still pretty expensive (and also not upgradable). Ok sure if HD DVD won I would have had to buy a player but by the time their is a winner buying an extra player would have been cheap anyway. I did not buy my PS3 for the movies that may be why am not all that exited about the whole deal. lets be fair to good old DVD I don't think we have the same great leap forward when DVD replaced VHS has the standard.
