The DVR is so easy to upgrade the hard drive on simply replace the internal drive with any size you want and you're done. No configuring nothing. It's best to do this as soon as you get it, as you'll have to reset all your scheduled recordings. I just got a new HR21, as they were retiring my old TiVo and dropped a 1 TB drive in there. It was sooo much easier then how I had to upgrade the TiVo. Plus now they have remote program recording. Meaning if I forgot to add a show, I can log in on my phone and set the DVR to record. Very cool. Plus Sunday Ticket for me is a must have.

Bruzer

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: DISH Network or DirecTV?

Will be leaving Directv shortly. Had service for 10 years and no problems w/SD (not even in bad weather). HOWEVER HD has been completely the opposite. It has never worked right from the beginning (almost 3 months ago). I have had tech's out 6 times now. HD ALWAYS either no signal or very pixillated (SD always great - 94-100% signal). Have the newest dish(Slimline) and reciever (HR21-700). Also note that the "on-demand" and the remote scheduling do NOT work with this newest receiver yet. (maybe w/ a software update in the future?). Oh yea, and had to pay $300 for the "privilege" to lease their HDDVR. So I have big $$$ invested in my new HDTV setup and can't enjoy it. Looks like Dish Network or Comcast for me.

teamster02

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: DISH Network or DirecTV?

Just ordered DirecTV. My previous setup was DIRECT with an over-sized 76 cm triple LNA dish (from Florida) to combat rain fade. Had DIRECTV since beginning, but seems like it was not very long ago when I bought an H10 with the over-sized dish and figured I was set. I was also picking up 3 zip codes worth of OTA HD local channels. The integrated guide was very well implemented, way better than cable and Dish. So as I wait for spring to reinstall my antennas (will do myself) here is what I am pondering.

One big question? If I stick with my H10 and 76 cm triple LNA setup, how many and for how long will I be able to recieve the MPEG2 HD channels??
Anybody....

Could care less about local HD channels, there is over the air and basic cable. Aleady have one area codes worth of QAM HD local channels on media com. Always have kept the basic basic package for the ease of hooking up auxillary TVs aroun the house anyway. Still not clear who will get my long term internet business, cable or DSL from the local telephone company.

If I personaly cared about DVR I would go with DISH.

But then there is the 90 Million dollar award to TVO!!

Also the ability of the second dish tuner to drive a cable channel might get me to drop basic cable. Realy want to see it in action. Friend who swears by it.

From what I here the dish guide is not the best, also here about speed issues of late.

>>>>>>>>>>>
Then there is DIRCTV, still pissed about the thought of losing my oversized dish.

Do they still try to insist on a telephone line? Not a chance here.

For the most part I have no complaints about DIRECT TV with the exception of the sports black out policy that nobody can explain. No body ever explained to me why one zip code was blacked out for the second iowa came on the Big Ten network.

Waiting to get my sat back when the weather breaks, if anyone can tell me what HD channels and for how long will say om MPEG2 and the three main sats (101,110,119) or where I can find the info it would be great. Could care less about locals on sat. The other reason to consider Dish.

First time on this site

Terry C

Terry C

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: DISH Network or DirecTV?

I switched from Dishnetwork to Directv 4 months ago. I made a horrible mistake and here is why.

1.- First I did not do the research, Dish discontinue my favorite channel, then I got angry then I messed up.

2.- I have hardware problems, the HR20 has some bugs, this is annoying but it is the least of my issues. The IR remote control sometimes goes into a frenzy and it starts transmitting like mad, other times it hangs, once a week perhaps, it stops working and I have to remove the batteries and then it becomes usable.

3.- Directv software is nice looking, real fancy compared with my old PVR500, but it is useless. For example, you cannot fully block a channel, if you punch the number of a blocked channel it will ask you if you want to unblock it, you may think I'm picky but here is why is relevant

4.- If you search for a title and it finds it it will display the channel number with no other information about the channel but its number. It will find titles in blocked channels, it will find the title in unsuscribed channels. Now if you have 150 or 200 channels how the heck do you suppose to remember which ones your are suscribed for by just looking at the channel number. What I have to do is exit out of the search and punch the channel see if it works.

5.- In the HR20 you can search and even if it does not find it, you can still schedule a recording and the machine will keep finding it and record it when available. Nice, but it records it even if you are not suscribed to the channel and when you try to play it goes into a frenzy trying to find access rights.

6.- Searching for movies is FRUSTRATING. You actually cannot unless you know the title, or the actor/director or a keyword. You can trick it by searching by keyword and entering "movie" as the keyword; but since it does not filter out the channels you cannot watch it is pretty much useless.

7.- It does not show you the score of a movie. For example I'm not a great fan of horror movies, so if it scores 1 or 2 I will not watch it, but if it is 4 or 5 and I have not seen I would probably read the rest of the description see if I like it.

8.- It is extremely difficult to schedule weekly recordings or daily recordings or mon-fri. You can record a program and it will keep up to 1/2/3/4/5 episodes new or repeated or both but if you want just one per week or one per day, that's hell.

9.- The interactive channel is hell, just like dishnetwork I wish I could disable it.

jf

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: DISH Network or DirecTV?

I have had Dish network for the last 2 years. Now I want HD for the new TV. I decided to go with Direct TV because they offer more HD channels then Dish at least for now. First install never happened with Direct, Skylink didn't even know what has going on if the installer would show up. I finally called Direct and they were VERY helpful and apologized for the poor service by the install company. I rescheduled the install for today. The install company didn't show up after waiting around all day. When I called Direct they advised that they were running late and would arrive within 2 hours. Of course 2 hours later still no installer. He finally showed up at 7:15pm in the dark. Then they wanted to charge me to put a pole in the ground to hold the dish. I was so mad I told him to leave. Of course they blamed Direct and Direct advised they don't have control of their schedules, which was confirmed by the install company that Direct doesn't have control over their schedule. Direct said that they can't control if the install company wants to charge for "custom" items. I will admit that the customer service with Direct TV was excellent compared to Dish. When I called to upgrade to HD with them, they advised me that since I wasn't a "new" customer I had to pay to upgrade to HD. Now I don't know what to do.
We go camping and take a receiver and a dish to have TV. Dish is tough to get in with 2 satellite system and I was told Direct was easier. Is that still true???? I was told that Direct uses 1 satellite. I guess if I decided to go back with Direct install another day this information would be helpful, and is my research of Direct having more HD channels correct?
Thanks

kevt

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: DISH Network or DirecTV?

Well, if you like the NFL, the choice is simple - DirecTV with the Sunday Ticket package. Every game in HD. Every game condensed down to 30 minutes on Monday. Highlights from every game sent directly to your DVR Monday morning.

If you don't care about football, then the choice is a bit more difficult.

I'd choose DirecTV (I've had them for nearly 10 years) because of their customer service - it's second to none. I can't imagine another company having as good of a customer service department. For example, we had a massive snow and ice storm a couple of years ago and the wind was just right to completely bury my dish (on the roof) for the first time ever. I called DirecTV, and they sent someone out to clear it off. The guy showed up and told me that a few people had fallen off of roofs lately so they're not allowed to go up on roofs anymore. So I called DirecTV back, they appologized and gave me a $200 credit on my account (and I didn't even ask for it!). That's nearly 3 months service for me. 24 hours later, enough snow had melted off that I was getting a signal again. Nice.

Another time, the Minnesota Wild were in the conference finals and they blacked the game out on ESPN for the first period due to a technical glitch (I think they believed the game was being shown locally). I called them up the next day to complain (couldnt' get through that night), and they gave me a $50 credit on my account... For missing one period of one hockey game. Nice!

Those are pretty much the only two issues I've ever had that I can think of, and they took care of me and then some. I'm a very satisfied customer.

I can't comment on the HD channels (I still have an MPEG-2 receiver -- have to figure out what I want to do about that, but I know I can get a free upgrade if I call and ask).

Xyzzy

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: DISH Network or DirecTV?

I had Directv and switched to Dish. Their dvr is simply the best. Their customer service is always friendlier, and faster to get through. As for the lead Directv has in hd channels, Dish will be adding dozens of new markets this year for hd locals, and plans on a huge expansion with their new sats for hd national channels. One of the best features that Dish has that I love is the external hard drive. I now have 2 500gb seagates full of hd and regular def material waiting to be viewed. So no longer does the size of the hard drive on the dvr itself really matter. And the service works beautifully!

mntwister

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: DISH Network or DirecTV?

"One of the best features that Dish has that I love is the external hard drive. DirecTV currently has more HD channels--period. Time Warner sucks--period. U-verse isn't ready until they can do more than one HD channel at a time. For sports, go with DirectTV--period. For no upfront costs, go with Dish. For value, it's a tossup. Traditionally Dish is cheaper. Lately, that hasn't been the case. Dish's DVR rocks--period! Sure it is fast and has all the features we're looking for, but there are small things I love.

Here's an example. You can go through all of your recordings and erase them in a batch mode. That's great, but here's the detail. If you are scrolling down, then press "Select" to check a program, it will check that program and then jump down to the next program. However, if you have been scrolling up, and check the box, it will automatically jump UP to the next program. It's a tiny detail, but it's tiny user interface details like this that make it so painless to use.

Nat559

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: DISH Network or DirecTV?

I kicked DirecTV to the curb after unfairly getting caught up in the decoder card debacle a couple years ago. Everyone keeps raving about the Dish DVR but I'm not that big a fan. It does have its selling points but a major drawback to me is that IT ONLY RECORDS ONE SIGNAL IN HD! One tuner is HD and the other tuner is not. That alone gets it a big negative check mark when compared to the dual HD HR-20/21. Second, I've got a DVR upstairs AND an HR-20 dual channel downstairs. Dish limited my parents to the one DVR running two rooms. If someone is watching something else in the other room, guess what? They are stuck with watching what they are recording in the living room instead of watching something else as it records. That's a huge negative as well. Now, throw in no OTA HD locals unless they pay someone to add an outdoor antenna and Dish becomes a distant second to Direct in my opinion.

Now, the negatives for Direct - biggest one is the equipment lease but then again, I've got old boxes out in my garage gathering dust from old installs. I have worked with HD DVRs from both satellite providers, and I agree that they are both great. I feel the need, however, to clarifiy some inaccuracies in previous posts:

Directv's HR20 receiver was released prematurely because they wanted to get the MPEG4 service rolled out. I got this receiver as soon as it came out, and it had some issues. It was NOT, however, the second coming of Hitler, as many comments on this and other forums suggested. It is now a fine DVR (after many updates), and has no issues. I agree that Dish's DVRs are more user friendly but I would caution anyone that it's not that big a deal, and to notice how few commenters here actually support their contention (about the Dish DVR being better) with examples.

Aztec Pilot mentioned the on-demand feature for Directv, but forgot to tell the newbies that you need a wired LAN in your home to get that feature. He was incorrect about Dish not having on-demand, and I'm not sure whether remote booking is possible with Dish. On-demand is a great feature, and with Directv and Dish, it's standard definition only for the time being.

Erik made an excellent point about multi-room use. While you can do the same thing with Directv, they don't offer the RF remotes, so you either need to walk into the other room to change the channel or buy an RF remote extender and install it yourself. The extra room is coax only, with both services. You may run component and HDMI simultaneously, but you only get the same channel on each display. Also, I believe with Directv you have to have the same channel on both displays even when using coax on the second display, unlike Dish.

Eaton said about Directv "when you add a drive you have no access to the old one." In fact, you can switch drives in the menu. This is not as user friendly as Dish, but it still works. You just don't have simultaneous access.

Jody said about Directv "the Directv boxes will re-record an episode if you have deleted the original recording." I have never experienced this, and am guessing it's a setting issue. He/she also said "The guide for dish is also much better, I like how they put the HD feed right next to the SD channel." The Directv HR20's guide works exactly the same way. He/she also said Directv doesn't have on-demand, another false statement.

Nat559 gave an excellent example of why the Dish DVR has a loyal following. This user friendlieness is a big feature to some, but it shouldn't be a deal breaker in my opinion.

Jon said about Dish "the program guide seamlessly integrates [OTA channels] in (including the sub channels), shows the signal strength, and does all the DVR goodness." "I can't speak for how DirecTV handles this, but surely someone else can..." Directv does the same thing, but you need to enter the setup menu to see signal strengths. Be aware that the HR21 does not have the off-air decoder, just the HR20.

I agree with many posters that it sucks to have to buy the equipment from Directv, but ebay is an option. You still need the access card from Directv, and last time I checked, the access cards cost $5. (a long time ago admittedly). I also agree that if you're a sports fan, go Directv.

I work with these units but it's not all I do, and I realize I'm not the be-all/end-all authority. If anything I've said is in error, please correct me!

Kevin G

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: DISH Network or DirecTV?

One correction to your post. DirecTV receivers and remotes are all RF. One of my HR10's is hooked up to 4 TV's in various rooms in my house (I have 7 total TV's and 4 recievers) and the remotes work from any room in the house. And they are all just regular DirecTV RC64r remotes. You can select between IR or RF on these receivers.

JVirg1

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: DISH Network or DirecTV?

This is one of the reasons i love EngadgetHD. I just went through the menu on my HR20 and found the IR/RF setting. Cool! And it doesn't need an external antenna like the Dish receivers! I use a universal remote at home and in almost all of my jobs, so I never noticed this. Thanks!

Kevin G

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: DISH Network or DirecTV?

One major correction--the Dish HD DVR can broadcast TV2 over NTSC/UHF *OR* RF coax in addition composite/RCA. So, if you have two TV's (and a neighbor) that want to watch channel 78, they all can.

Moreover, the Dish HD DVR can record THREE HD programs at once. Only one can be OTA. However, the other two can be satellite feeds.

allargon
