Hope they get their act together soon or I'm taking this player back to the store. No official response from Samsung on anything at all and their support rep's have conflicting responses. Would like to keep this player if Samsung delivered a firmware fix on time or at least let us know something officially. To much hush, hush!

Dan

Comments on Samsung's BD-UP5000 is failing to deliver

I have been waiting for this player since they announced it in the
summer. Heck, DTS MA and Dolby True with 7.1 analogs, the Reon HQV
upscaler and the ability to play both formats with interactivity.
Wow, what a combo, it looked like the perfect player. When these
started hitting the stores, I tried desparately to find one and they
were all snapped up. I already own blu-ray discs and a PS3, but
wanted to go format neutral and the addition of the HQV and internal
decoding of the new sound formats would allow me to keep my Denon
receiver with 7.1 analog inputs but no HDMI.

Then 2 things happened. Early reports showed problems. I wasn't all
that concerned with the sound problems, because with the Samsung
1400, they released firmware to allow for DTS Master and Dolby true,
so I am sure that is coming any day. But the 2nd thing that happened
was Warner going blu. That's when I realized I can spend the $800 on
a really good Denon, Pioneer Elite or Sony ES blu-ray player!!

Samsung made this the ultimate combo player. The LG cannot tout 7.1
analogs and the Reon, nor DTS Master (yet). I truly believe there
will be firmware updates to improve this player and allow for the new
sound formats, though with all the delays, I believe this player
should have been ready by now. With the Sammy 1400 blu-ray player, it
was only 2 weeks after the players release that Samsung updated the
player for the new sound formats. That is probably why there has been
no review model sent to review sites. If you bought one, I truly
believe this player will be capable with updates coming very soon.
This player has not yet had a wide release and I believe the updates
will come around that time. Amazon doesn't even have them yet.

But for me, I don't want to spend money on getting into hd-dvd
anymore. Before Warner, it looked feasable, and my instincts told me
Warner might go hd-dvd instead of blu. But now, I will wait for the
Panny bd50 player that has internal decoders and is 2.0, and just use
my PS3 for upconverting regular dvds. I have seen upscalers on
Toshiba, Panasonic and Sony stand-alones, and the PS3 has one of the
best upscalers on the market.

mntwister

Comments on Samsung's BD-UP5000 is failing to deliver

I have owned this player for a couple of weeks, but there are several movies that it has problems with:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=12792600&posted=1

Hopefully a firmware revision will fix these sorts of issues.

Scott Nelson

Comments on Samsung's BD-UP5000 is failing to deliver

firmware released.

carljanderson

Comments on Samsung's BD-UP5000 is failing to deliver

I guess I'm lucky I don't have an HDMI receiver yet. :¬) I have a 5000 and so far I've only used SPDIF to connect. Why? Because after hearing all the problems I cancelled my preorder. It has its fair share of glitches but NO multichannel TrueHD or DTS-HD MA was the clincher. It's rumored multichannel will be available after a firmware in May, which is ridiculous even if they followed through and kept that date.

But hey, I hear they'll have a successor in October that will reportedly do what the 5000 was SUPPOSED to do. I absolutely love it and have bought a second one. I've had no problems playing HD-DVDs and one problem playing a particular Blu-Ray disc - Resident Evil: Extinction. Yes, this unit is not perfect - new technology rarely is - but for me it is wonderful to watch both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVDs. The fact that the BD-UP5000 has a network connection means there is the opportunity for Samsung to issue firmware updates (my advise is to check any other player for this important capability before you buy it). This unit also has an amazing upconverter that looks better than my Oppo 981 (the previous "best" upconverter).

Dual format players are the way to go - as long as even ONE major studio is exclusive to either format. There's lots of speculation and hearsay from owners and others about timelines for upgrades to this unit - it's a shame to see engadget issue a "report" based purely on comments posted on forums. I'm not sure how this helps anyone. Instead of just waiting for a review unit (read "freebie") if you really want to be of service to your readers why not go out and buy one to test (return it in 30 days if you can't afford it) or contact Samsung directly for some answers rather than relying on hearsay.

Director Bob

Comments on Samsung's BD-UP5000 is failing to deliver

"it's a shame to see engadget issue a "report" based purely on comments posted on forums"

See my comments above!

lucyfan62

Comments on Samsung's BD-UP5000 is failing to deliver

I don't see it as a 'report', its a heads up for a future review when he gets the player he's been waiting on. Why discount the forum posts when they are direct user feedback? He posted to AVS asking what users see as need addressed. I applaud this and think more reviews should be done this way, especially when potential buyers AND Samsung could benefit from it. I wasn't all that concerned with the sound problems, because with the Samsung 1400, they released firmware to allow for DTS Master and Dolby true, so I am sure that is coming any day. But the 2nd thing that happened was Warner going blu. That's when I realized I can spend the $800 on a really good Denon, Pioneer Elite or Sony ES blu-ray player!!

Samsung made this the ultimate combo player. The LG cannot tout 7.1 analogs and the Reon, nor DTS Master (yet). I truly believe there will be firmware updates to improve this player and allow for the new sound formats, though with all the delays, I believe this player should have been ready by now. With the Sammy 1400 blu-ray player, it was only 2 weeks after the players release that Samsung updated the player for the new sound formats. That is probably why there has been no review model sent to review sites. If you bought one, I truly believe this player will be capable with updates coming very soon. This player has not yet had a wide release and I believe the updates will come around that time. Amazon doesn't even have them yet.

But for me, I don't want to spend money on getting into hd-dvd anymore. Before Warner, it looked feasable, and my instincts told me Warner might go hd-dvd instead of blu. But now, I will wait for the Panny bd50 player that has internal decoders and is 2.0, and just use my PS3 for upconverting regular dvds. I have seen upscalers on Toshiba, Panasonic and Sony stand-alones, and the PS3 has one of the best upscalers on the market.

mntwister

Comments on Samsung's BD-UP5000 is failing to deliver

In response to LucyFan62

He went to avsforum to a thread of actual owners (I have owned one since before Christmas) and everything he says is true. As I said before, makes me wonder again what's up with Samsung. Is their marketing that inept? Buggy unit comes out 6+ months after the announcement and then on the same week it hits is wide retail, they announce the successor. Sounds like they know this one will be a flop and plan for the next one, hoping to do better? Unfortunately given Samsung's reputation for over promising product, they may not get it until Christmas - if this year. Now I'm stuck on what to do for my HD DVD and Blu-Ray movies. Any ideas folks?

cloudsplitter

Comments on Samsung's BD-UP5000 is failing to deliver

Um, keep this one.

Vince

Comments on Samsung's BD-UP5000 is failing to deliver

After what the BDA said about profile 1.0 & profile 1.1 players having problems with the coming final profile 1.0 spec stuff
(and that if you own profile 1.0 & profile 1.1 Blu-ray players and do have severe problems you are on your own, you knew what you were getting into, suckers)

Why would anyone buy anything Blu-ray that wasn't profile 2.0?

(which is coming who knows when & for who knows how much for what spec)

All they can offer right now is the mere 'expectation' that the PS3 will be ok (which is hardly a categorical answer either way).

That's pretty cr@p if a limited & over-priced game console isn't your idea of a standalone player for your a/v rack.

After the whining of the Blu-ray fanclub over whether the 51gb TL HD DVD discs might have caused Toshiba HD A1 owners some problems in being able to make use of that 3rd layer their silence on this is as hypocritical as it is deafening.

Truth Teller

Comments on Samsung's BD-UP5000 is failing to deliver

Ooops, obvious typo

(After what the BDA said about profile 1.0 & profile 1.1 players having problems with the coming final profile 1.0 spec stuff)

should have read "coming final profile 2.0 spec stuff"

Truth Teller

Comments on Samsung's BD-UP5000 is failing to deliver

I'm holding out for the 2.0 profile blu-ray players.. Or even both. You accept that you will have to upgrade something later, such as your AVR to get full audio decoders. Cost: about $800, for now.

Or you can get this beast, knowing that it is imcomplete but is spec'ed to do every last thing you need (full decodes, 7.1 out, both formats, one remote, one player and one system config for all DVD-like objects (important to other family members)). The only thing I would wish for would be DivX. Cost: about $800, and hopefully done.

Yes, there are bugs and burrs. But everything has them. I then put the same disk in my computer which has a LG HD/bluray combo player and the episodes play fine. The Samsung must have been rushed to market and not well sorted out. I’m really at a lost as to why it took so long for this unit to come to market yet have so many problems. My unit has to be rebooted sometimes to just get it to work properly. I recently bought a LG 200 HD combo unit and it has none of the Samsung issues and also plays back some content smoother and also loads faster than the Samsung. I just wish it had the 1080p 24 frame feature that the Samsung unit has. Should not have to wait for a firmware update at this price point. Shame on Samsung for giving us a beta version and not a fully tested unit. It is just like their LED TV when they first came out they had a bug and it was not until a month after release that Samsung came out with a new firmware update for their LED LCD TV’s , bad thing those that bought the first ones are out of luck since Samsung does not upgrade firmware’s for TV’s. If Samsung wants to be the next Sony they better provide better service than they are providing to current customers.

Kenneth L
