I have been waiting for this player since they announced it in the summer. Heck, DTS MA and Dolby True with 7.1 analogs, the Reon HQV upscaler and the ability to play both formats with interactivity. Wow, what a combo, it looked like the perfect player. When these started hitting the stores, I tried desparately to find one and they were all snapped up. I already own blu-ray discs and a PS3, but wanted to go format neutral and the addition of the HQV and internal decoding of the new sound formats would allow me to keep my Denon receiver with 7.1 analog inputs but no HDMI.
Then 2 things happened. Early reports showed problems. I wasn't all that concerned with the sound problems, because with the Samsung 1400, they released firmware to allow for DTS Master and Dolby true, so I am sure that is coming any day. But the 2nd thing that happened was Warner going blu. That's when I realized I can spend the $800 on a really good Denon, Pioneer Elite or Sony ES blu-ray player!!
Samsung made this the ultimate combo player. The LG cannot tout 7.1 analogs and the Reon, nor DTS Master (yet). I truly believe there will be firmware updates to improve this player and allow for the new sound formats, though with all the delays, I believe this player should have been ready by now. With the Sammy 1400 blu-ray player, it was only 2 weeks after the players release that Samsung updated the player for the new sound formats. That is probably why there has been no review model sent to review sites. If you bought one, I truly believe this player will be capable with updates coming very soon. This player has not yet had a wide release and I believe the updates will come around that time. Amazon doesn't even have them yet.
But for me, I don't want to spend money on getting into hd-dvd anymore. Before Warner, it looked feasable, and my instincts told me Warner might go hd-dvd instead of blu. But now, I will wait for the Panny bd50 player that has internal decoders and is 2.0, and just use my PS3 for upconverting regular dvds. I have seen upscalers on Toshiba, Panasonic and Sony stand-alones, and the PS3 has one of the best upscalers on the market.
“Getting too close completely blurred what we saw to the point of incomprehension, but again, this shows a whole heap of potential that's fascinating to us.”
