Elgato updates EyeTV Hybrid / 250 Plus TV tuners: Clear-QAM now welcome

It seems that Elgato was most proud of its totally revamped EyeTV 3 software, but we couldn't help but notice two rather substantial hardware updates that it also chose to announce (albeit quietly) at Macworld 2008. Starting today, the firm's EyeTV Hybrid USB tuner and its EyeTV 250 Plus TV receiver / video converter (shown after the break) are both available with built-in support for unencrypted digital cable (Clear-QAM) channels. 'Course, they'll both still pull in NTSC / ATSC signals, but the addition of Clear-QAM support is a real boon for OTA addicts. Pricing for the extra versatile devices remains unchanged at $149.95 and $199.95, respectively, but unfortunately, existing owners will not be able to receive the newfound functionally with a simple firmware update.

Gee, it would be nice if Elgato's reps at Macworld knew this. I was at the show yesterday and saw the EyeTV Hybrid tuning in standard cable and QAM. I asked if the EyeTV Hybrid I bought last year could do this and was told yes. Came home from the show, bought the EyeTV 3 upgrade online (it wasn't available for purchase at the show), loaded it up and voila, no QAM. Bitter? A tad.

I saw this article and went over to the Elgato site since I had been thinking about getting a tuner but needed QAM capability. When I got there, I found that the EyeTV Hybrid, normally priced at $150, is now on sale for $100 during MacWorld! Plus, if you look around online, you can find an extra 10% discount! That's quite a deal. Looking forward to some sweet HD on my Mac...

I wonder if the new EyeTV Hybrid is just a rebadged Hauppauge 950q. Wonder if the 950q will work with EyeTV like the 950 does as well....
