The plans are en route to position Blu Ray vs DVD, HD DVD will be phased by the end of Q3 2008, with both retailers and studios adopting Blu Ray exclusively, including Europe and Aisia, which will progressively kill the imports as well.
This coming from actual insiders, the ones who actually predicted the Warner move.
Not that you'll believe it, but we'll talk again after Paramount goes Blu (even if only through neutrality) and Universal goes neutral, mkay ? :)

HD DVD is the only genuinely mass-market friendly format - and is also the only one able to offer a range of complete specs at a range of decent prices.

Only HD DVD can offer the combo disc & the Twin format which ensure no-one gets hurt or left behind when the switch from SD to HD happens.

Blu-ray can only ensure HDMs on disc remain a niche product.

Blu-ray can & will end up stuck with the game console kiddies and good luck to it for that, it's welcome to them.

Blu-ray doesn't even have 1% of the total movie disc market, they have won nothing.

No matter how much they try and talk over them those are the relevant & salient facts.

They are EXTENDING their support to RELEASE MORE CATALOG TITLES. They will continue releasing for at least additional few weeks probably through June MORE titles. The ones mentioned are GOING TO BE RELEASED BEFORE the previous cutoff. May 41st is NOT THE END OF HD DVD SUPPORT ANYMORE!

The only rule to this extension is that ALL catalog titles along with day/date will be delayed.

What hd-dvd fans keep failing to see is that BD has a better business model and HD-DVD has a better unimplemented tech model.

The triple layer sd/hd-dvd on disk could have made a nice gradual transition to HD,2 years ago. At this point it's to late.

BD concentrated on getting help and support. Sony has a great deal of experience in getting products to market and lent that to the BD alliance. The got the content makers on board and the device makers on board. They concentrated on the features that matter most to the greatest number of consumers putting them on near equal footing as HD-DVD. They also correctly gambled on the rate of HDM adoption and price. Toshiba showed people are not ready to move to hdm without a clear winner, on price and features they should have won clean and easy.

HD -dvd has some life left and a lot of great ideas. COnsumers don't care about most of the hd-dvd features and aren't ready for the internet.

Money wasn't paid by either side that made a studio stop supporting a product. Incentives were made to studios to get them to support the respective products. Anyone who went exclusive did so based on business decisions and support of the format. Transformers on HD-DVD was supported by an incentive but 200 million or what ever is a drop in the bucket compared to the kind of support that the studio has been giving. The same is tru on the blu side.

Unless studios that support HD-DVD and take cash are fighting for the people and studios that do the same to support BD are all evil and greedy. I think this is your view.

At what point has an HD-DVD product been sabotaged? I never heard of a patent fight or wide scale hardware failures on the HD-DVD side.

As for product endcaps, that is not anti-competitive either. Unless you think it's illegal that Frito Lay(tm) buys prime shelf space in grocery stores to sell more product. Target end caps are the same thing. Prime space in all stores costs $$.


A lot of things might happen but you have a history of being on the wrong side with any of your guesses.

Toshiba is not finished. They have a little while to keep HD-DVD alive in its current form. If they studios think that the format war should be over and Toshiba drags it out there will be backlash. No matter how good of a chance they have with some future tech they need it out right now. The studios were willing to go Blu because doing so caused the greatest shift in the format war. Studios thing DVD sales are tanking based on the format war and feel threatened by consumer uncertainty. Right now Toshiba continuing this war will garner ill will.

Eh? What TACTICS did HD DVD Group did except give incentives to Paramount and Dreamworks?

Should I remind you that Blu-Ray has done this with Disney, Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, Paramount and now Warner.

Second, I can't remember when did HD DVD payoff retailers and rental chains to stop carrying HD DVD altogether despite the fact that majority of consumers have not made a decision at all. Less then 2% of mainstream market can be hardly called a majority. If you really don't see how these things are done then you are the one who needs a reality check. Don't you find it convenient that the only thing Blu brigade has against HD DVD is Paramount going HD DVD exclusive? Nothing else. While on the other side every single retailer and rental chain decision to stop carrying HD DVD, a format with more value and functionality then Blu-Ray is common business sense? LOL, give me a break. What are you trying to sell here?

There's foul play here by Sony and they are excersizing their influence in retail with other products to blackmail so they would ditch HD DVD. This is a very similar scenario as you see with high game review scores and game publishers pulling advertising if they don't get high scores.

Sony is an established brand and every single middle sized retail chain makes a lot of money on their other products. All Sony has to do is threaten to pull retail products from a few retailer chains, kill their profits and the retailer is forced to support Blu-Ray whether they like it or not. It's really criminal tactic and well known one by Sony.

You need to look at the overall picture of things. Sony is the forced company here and willing to do anything (and they already have a tradition of criminal behavior) as if they lose this war, it's the end of the company by itself as they are already losing the PS3 war, they would lose the Blu-Ray war and the company would go down. Please name the retail store that Sony paid off to stop stocking HD-DVD products? Sony never threated to pull it's products if a store didn't drop hd-dvd,if this WAS the case Toshiba we be on the BDA like white on rice. They would bring with them federal regulators.

A format only have values if the retailers see it. The BDA is big but so is Toshiba and MS. I haven't seen any place stop stocking HD-DVD. Even my local mom and pop shops still have both.

Sony hasn't pulled any advertising due to poor reviews. IF that was the case there would be no PS3 ads for it's first year. EVERYONE panned the PS3 but the ads were everywhere. I haven't heard of any game reviewer talking about Sony doing this on their published titles either.


Yes Sony is very big and they leveraged a lot on BD. They would have a LOT to loose if they did what you said. They would in effect loose everything if they did ANY of the behaviors you stated. It isn't like Toshiba is some poor beggar company without a legal department. That doesn't even count MS. Sony has to play it legal because MS lawyers are > all other lawyers.

HD-DVD did a good job making a consumer friendly format. The BDA did a good job getting business on board, studios,CE makers,video stores, and retailers.

Can you do that on a Blu-Ray player? Because I think that's pretty cool. I'm not hating on Blu-Ray, I'm just curious if its players can play HD files on ordinary DVD-Rs. Anyone know?

I have the Xbox 360 HD-DVD accessory because it's cheap and works fine, but I'm not motivated to rush out and buy an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray burner any time soon. Nobody in their right mind would want to continue with HD DVD, a dying format with such limited choice!

I think the only way to see HD DVD make a come back is to sell millions of players this year which would make all the studios look at them.

I think Toshiba's best bet is to release a blu-ray/HD DVD dual format player for the same cost as the low blu-ray players. Would that be more of a hit than their current HD DVD only players? I think most people would start buying these to get universal and paramount titles. I know I would have if they had been available in the fall for the $500 I got a PS3 for. Warner and Blu decided to play hardball, showing no professional courtesy to HD DVD and informing them of their decision beforehand, so why should Universal and HD DVD now play nice? I like it. Anyways, of course they have are addressing it, but they will not say a thing until the dual format switch over has been completely setup and ready to go. Just as Warner switched at the very last moment before CES, these guys definitely do not want to let any information out that could hinder their bargaining position or change the market dynamics until they are absolutely confident in their new plan/strategy. I would guess it'll be at least a few weeks before we hear anything from Paramount, and even longer before Universal comes around.
But I can't but think how painful it will be and how stubborn they surely are since they are the main studio backer in HD-DVD and are the main player in the HD-DVD organization.

That premise is just plain false. I cannot believe that you would actually believe that crap.
HD media comprises like 1-2% of Warner's sales, and will continue to do so until mass adoption of HD players happens. That WILL NEVER HAPPEN with two formats. No one wants to end up with a Betamax. Warner has already shown that they believe they will make more money in the longer term by quickly killing the weaker format (HD-DVD) and pushing mass adoption of Blu-ray. They came to this conclusion despite the fact that Toshiba was rumored to be offering on the order of $500 million to go HD-DVD exclusive. In light of that, the idea that they could possibly make more revenue from continuing sales of HD-DVD media vs pushing Blu-ray to mass adoption is laughable.

But don't mind me (or critical thinking), feel free to continue to live in that fantasy of yours.
