I don't buy my new HDTVs for sports, I buy them for video games. I upgraded to HD on a 32" screen 4 years ago pretty much because I didn't want to be stuck in SD forever. Then we upgraded to 5.1 surround sound for the Xbox 360 in 2005. Finally we upgraded to a 1080p 46" 10,000:1 contrast ratio LCD for some Halo 3 goodness last year towards the end of summer. Sports are much better in HD, but really shouldn't be the only reason you upgrade.

Of course its not the only reason, but planning for a big game is a good time to finally bite the bullet.
