Seriously, what do these numbers say? Let's all try to be objective here:
- HD DVD standalones could NOT surpass BD players even though they were priced WAY below.
- At those prices, you are bound to see an increase in overall sales for HD DVD.

If this signals the HD DVD comeback some are hoping for, than congrats. But here's what's not posted above:

Now which format do you think retailers want to have on their shelves? I'll tell you, the one that is going to give them the best return on their investment (aka inventory purchase and retail space).
With numbers like those, it's easy to see that retailers will want to clearance out their HD DVD stock ASAP in order to concentrate on a product/format that will give them decent profits.
BD has the majority backing of studios and even if Toshiba keeps up the fight, and even if the last two holdout studios remain committed, retailers will have the final say.

Like I said, all this shows is that cheap players brings you back from the brink of failure to just shy of the brink....either way HDDVD can see the end from where they are standing except they have their eyes closed and are begging for mercy.

The trend will continue, HDDVD players will slowly lose more of the pie to blu-ray players. this is my prediction. I expected player sales to be about 60/40, because I knew that Blu-ray was outselling HD DVD in December and considering all the sales 60/40 sounds about right.

We expect movie sales to be like that, but this is about player/stand-alone sales. Which HD-DVD had been victorious until sometime before Christmas when they dipped under 50% market share. 65-35 means Blu-Ray players not including the PS3 are squarely beating HD-DVD players.

Too many people, myself included, prefer to have a disc in our hands that we can then rip to a portable format or backup to another disc if we want without the DRM that is commonly associated with download. Yes, yes, I know. DVDs have DRM via encrption, but that's been broken for over five years now? Maybe closer to 10? (I've also noticed that people who distrust those of us who want backups of our media aren't the parents of small children.)

The 2007 standalone sales figures were approximately 50-50 (you may check that with NPD).

The weekly ratio of 66-64 is well above the 2007 figures. Moreover, it shows that, despite one full week of slashed prices, Toshiba couldn't do better than being outsold 2-to-1. Is that a real improvement?
