It is easy to move product when it is sold at fire-sale prices. Just the other day my dad said he was going to buy an HD DVD player. Let's all try to be objective here:<br>- HD DVD standalones could NOT surpass BD players even though they were priced WAY below.<br>- At those prices, you are bound to see an increase in overall sales for HD DVD.<br><br>If this signals the HD DVD comeback some are hoping for, than congrats. But here's what's not posted above:<br><br>TOTAL SALES in $$$ <br>Blu-ray Disc - $6,033,540<br>HD-DVD - $1,182,248<br><a href="http://www.thedigitalbits.com" rel="nofollow">http://www.thedigitalbits.com</a><br><br>Now which format do you think retailers want to have on their shelves? They still sell fine. People know the war isn't over and they can get HD movies cheap. The A30 is around $150, and it even includes that useless buzzword "1080p" that everyone wants. The 2:1 ratio was the norm for *media* sales, not players.  Standalone players were closer to 50/50, with Blu-ray holding a slight lead at the end of 2007.  So a shift to 66/34 for Blu-ray in player sales *is* a significant sustained shift for the market.  And this is WITH Toshiba's price cuts in effect.  Even with those cuts, Toshiba is unable to swing a majority, or even come close.  This is bad news for HD DVD, no matter how they spin it. Another voice of sanity!  It's infuriating to see how many people out there think that downloads are going to take over everything.  It's not going to happen.  <br><br>Too many people, myself included, prefer to have a disc in our hands that we can then rip to a portable format or backup to another disc if we want without the DRM that is commonly associated with download.  Yes, yes, I know.  DVDs have DRM via encrption, but that's been broken for over five years now?  Maybe closer to 10? The 2007 standalone sales figures were approximately 50-50 (you may check that with NPD).<br><br>The weekly ratio of 66-64 is well above the 2007 figures. Moreover, it shows that, despite one full week of slashed prices, Toshiba couldn't do better than being outsold 2-to-1.
