The problem with those who are always claiming that upscale is horrible is that for the vast majority of us (that have 32" - 50" HD TVs) isn't not horrible enough to justify spending $400+ on Blu-ray
(and that's whenever profile 2.0 players ever appear - many of us will never put a game console in our a/v rack).
We're already investing several hundred $/£'s worth on DRVs for our HD TV services which offer 'HD all the time' as opposed to a periodic expensive Blu-ray disc.
If so many people just don't see Blu-ray as worth the cost for the benefits it offers then you sure as hell are not going to be convincing many that HD TV services are not worth it.
The exception here is HD DVD.
It is a complete spec & is able to get cheap enough fast enough - and Twin discs (and combos) mean no-one gets left behind.
All a complete Blu-ray win can do is ensure HDMs on disc remain a niche product.
