Nfinity, even though I think there's been a concerted effort to thoroughly kill off HD DVD, there are simpler explanations.
I don't know a darn thing about the situation (and I'm betting you don't either) but if I had to guess, I'd guess that they either bought into cheaper regions, or just top 20 regions, or had their own people buying local advertising. Since I don't know where it aired, I couldn't really make any further comment; however, it's not unheard of to have a big televised event that has regional advertising, and there's always "dead air" available for local advertising.
