In that respect the add-on is a better proposition than a standalone player. It might be possible to use BackupHDDVD or other tools to extract the movie onto a computer.
Interestingly, the 5 disc mail-in offer ends on Feb 28. We'll see if they replace it with another one because with out the deal, no HD DVD player would be worth the money. It may well be that Toshiba don't intend to replace it at all which might explain why there are so many firesales right now. March will be interesting.
