HD DVD and Blu-ray releases on February 12th, 2008
It's the second week of February as Blu-ray continues to pour out another seven titles that helps the Blu camp on its way to 29 for the month. Meanwhile the red camp has two movies on its way to 17 for the month, of which only seven are from studios you've heard of. Sure we've heard of Girls Gone Wild, but it's hardly what we'd call a HD DVD 386 vs Blu-ray 444*
Blu-ray
- The Amateurs (First Look)
- Becoming Jane (Buena Vista)
- Gone Baby Gone (Buena Vista)
- No Reservations (Warner)
- Over America In High Definition (Topics)
- Over California In High Definition (Topics)
- We Own the Night (Sony)
- The Amateurs (First Look)
- Girls Gone Wild: Baby Bash - Live And Uncensored (Mantra)

I give up!!!! You guys win!!!!
as a previous hd dvd supporter, and seeing the facts (toshiba's world is crumbling faster than anyone expected), I have to say that was cool of you, truth. I knew you always tried to be rational, and it does contrast with nfinity's wilder tone(whom you've been grouped together with before).
Now lets hope the panasonic BD50 doesn't have dvd upscaling/deinterlacing issues and we might just have the first perfect blu-ray player (disregarding profiles -- i'll watch making-of featurettes but i'll never play the games or anything)
Is the REAL Truth Teller or the fake one thats been shadowing him lately!?
And if its the real Truth Teller I hope someone is over there at his house to support him when he goes into shock...same nfinity.
A fake one. You don't expect the real one to snap back into reality so fast do you?
lol yep fake
Another huge week for both formats.
I know I'd be ecstatic if I had gotten a player for Christmas.
Is Gone Baby Gone good? I heard that the younger Affleck was pretty decent in it when it comes to acting...
HD DVD releases continue to be abysmal.
OMFG...HUGE NEWS...
Netfilx Goes Blu-ray Exclusive
Oh man, I was thinking of ordering a HD DVD player to netflix movies too. I guess that idea is out. Now I really want Universal and Paramount to jump ship. I wonder how many titles netflix orders. Do they count in the nielson ratings?
Hah! Yeah, but how will Netflix be able to rent out the HD HD (High Demand, High Definition) version of Bimbos Gone Wild? Yeah, I knew they'd regret their decision...
Wow, I can't wait to run out and buy all of these Blu-Ray disks right away. First, gotta go get a Blu-Ray player .... I'll be right back, going to run to Wal-Mart and Best Buy ........................... HOLY CRAP!!!! $400 for a disk player? And $30 per disk???????????? Yeah, not so much.
Funny, but true...
Dude really I don't want to be an ass or sound arrogant but 400 is not that serious...
I make that much in 2 freaking weeks and I'm a college student thats taking 5 courses and living in an apt with 2 other friends.
I pay bills. I work. I eat. I go to school and I can buy a Bluray Player today if I wanted to.
So quit bitching about the price. Cuz clearly if that were so important HD DVD would have won right? Expensive is when you when into the 700 and above range. We're talking about High Def here...its new technology and its awesome. Did you expect it to be cheap?
The only reason HD DVD was so cheap was cuz Toshiba was taking a loss on them all this time.
Seriously, that's the one reason I don't have one yet. I could afford it, but it's just so insane to me to drop $400 for a disk player. If I watched them everyday, perhaps. When they get under $200, and they have the whole profile thing straightened out (I mean, this is a big deal!!), I'm in. But until then, I'll enjoy what HD-DVDs I can find, and upconverting.
Dear Cassiline:
Dude, I could easily afford this. It's a principle thing to me. I only bought an HD-DVD player when it was on sale for $99 at BB, and I had a $50 gift card lying around. I figure, I got a good upconverter at the very least. Since Warner went Blu, I've been watching BR prices intently. On principle, $400 is just too much for me for a disk player. Say it outloud to someone ... kinda sounds rediculous, doesn't it. That's exactly what my wife says too, when I bring it up. And she likes to spend money, trust me!
Tom, I'm sure they'll be down to $200 by the Xmas buying season. Maybe not $200 MSRP, but you'll be able to find them actually selling for $200.
Umm, how much did you guys spend on your HDTV? And you're not willing to drop 10% or 20% of that same money into the player of the content? Perhaps you should not have maxed out your CC on your TV and saved a little for the player.
Watching a black screen isn't to fun, is it?
Yeah, I figure they will. I want to p/u a couple actually once they reach that point. And I'm sure millions will join me at that price point as well.
Wow Taylor, there are so many wrong assumptions there, I don't even know where to start.
First off, I have four LCD HDTVs (Three 40" Samsungs, one 32" Westy for the bedroom). All were paid w/ bonus money (not bragging, but since you brought it up). I also have plenty of content to watch, via DTV, my Sunday Tix Superfan package, HBO, and via my soon-to-be-somewhat-obsolete HD-DVD player - but thanks for your concern!! Sure, I could easily afford one or two $400 Blu-Ray players, but comparing those to the TV purchases can be apples and oranges.
First - my TVs are going to be around for a helluva lot longer than any player. When and if quality HD downloads (I stress Quality!), I'll still watch them on this same TV. I like the way these TVs look when on and off (short of the Westy, but you can't have everything!), so it's worth the investment to me. They will pay me back w/ years and years of quality enjoyment.
Secondly, my TVs are all the full spec I need. I may be wrong, but isn't the PS3 the only BD player on sale right now that will be 2.0, via firmware upgrade? Not that I'm in to all that extra stuff, but I think I'll wait till the players are all 2.0 before I make a BD player purchase, just in case. Perhaps one of my daughters will want the interactive features? Who knows ... maybe even me if they are interesting enough.
And lastly, I know these prices will come down considerable in the next 12-15 months. In the meantime, I have plenty of content to watch, so there isn't really that incentive to throw down $400 or more for a BD-player! Plus - who knows, perhaps HD-DVD will pull this out afterall ..... ok, that's BS, but its funny.
If you want to spend the cash on a BD player, God Bless Ya!!! Good for you - I hope you enjoy it! It's a free country, and I encourage everyone to do what makes them happy! But right now, I'm waiting.
Just to relativize the HD DVD spike in numbers (not a lead mind you, far from it hehe), you might have wanted to specify that there is a big promo on discs going on since a week (and continuing this week) at both Amazon and Best Buy (Bogo, including Transformers and the Bournes among others).
Just want to make sure people like Nfinity won't get hurt when the numbers shift again majorly toward Blu Ray when that 2for1 promo ends or a Blu Ray bogo shows up ;)
Man, if you're going to start including porn (soft or otherwise) you might as well be adding the host of other porn distributers that are Blu only.
How about we keep this stat Best Buy approved. DVDs only sold at the big boxes. Eh!?!
Sounds reasonable, but the HD DVD "fight to the death" extremists would probably cry foul. Remember the huge flap over continuing to include the Paramount releases in the Blu-ray total after their switch? Ugh.
Man, I am so ready for this war to be over. After Warner's announcement, insiders were supposedly predicting Paramount & Universal going neutral by the end of this month, once they had all their ducks in a row. I hope so--I'm looking forward to buying some of those movies.
Gone Baby Gone and We Own The Night were supposed to be awesome movies. Becoming Jane and No reservations were apparently decent also.
HD-DVD is looking quite impotent right now. Their line ups are quite pathetic, actually.
$400 for Bluray player is insanely cheap considering I paid $699 for a normal progressive scan DVD player in 2001 (it was the good quality Toshiba SD-9200) but still. The Toshiba SD-9200 looked pretty pathetic video quality-wise when it was put next to my PS3!
I'm already predicting it...HD DVD takes Blu-ray this week. Lead by...
Girls Gone Wild: Baby Bash - Live And Uncensored
>;>
(Sarcasm Intended)
Hmmph. Nothing on either side that I'd buy. And it's been that way for the last several weeks.
In 1990 it was $500 for a good Hi-Fi 4 head VHS VCR. $500 was a lot of money in 1990 , and believe it or not quite a few people bought them. Now people bitch about spending $400 for a Hi Def Blu-ray DVD player. In proportion, it really isn't nearly as much money. I think everyone is just use to buying disposable chinese made electronic gear on the cheap.
Yeah, but the cheap disposable chinese stuff is at least up to spec, and works as intended from teh outset (if not that long).
Or you get the outlier like my Aiwa receiver that's been abused in 6 houses over 10 years.
American Gangster is next week. After that, I don't know if there is another HD DVD title coming out to buy.
I've been saving for a dual format player, but since Sammy's got a horrid review I am waiting a bit longer. Only I bit longer till I turn blu... sigh.
Hang in there, Evan. With the way the wind has been blowing, I wouldn't be surprised if Toshiba themselves announce a dual-format player in the months ahead. That would be a great bone for them to throw their HD DVD early adopters.
Hahahahahahah
I guess HD-DVD is really desperate. When in total doubt release HD boobs for all of the adolescent Xboxers that bought the HD addon.
I can just see it now.
"Dude, Girls Gone Wild."
"Man thats old news"
"Dude its Girls Gone Wild in HD"
"Dude, wicked"
It will probably be the best selling HD-DVD in the past 2 months.
