Harman Kardon hops on the Blu-ray bandwagon
Harman Kardon, perhaps emboldened by the recent changes in the format war climate, has announced support for Blu-ray. Talk is cheap, though, so the company will release a Blu-ray player in the £450 - £500 range (approximately $880 - $980) at IFA 2008 in September as proof of its commitment. We like Harman Kardon gear, but that's a bit rich for our blood. Luckily, the company is also going to be sprinkling Blu-ray across its lineup, right down to its HTIB systems. It's safe to assume that HK will maintain its high-end luster (with prices to match), so don't expect bargain sort of prices from the brand; but still, it's always better to have more competition in the game. And speaking of high end, HK showered some more love on Blu-ray by showing (and thus maintaining the promise of) the DVC 600 Blu-ray / HDD recorder first seen at IFA 2007. Supposedly, this beast will enable owners to capture "up to eight channels of TV," and it'll also boast a 1TB hard drive and an optional BD writer. Beyond that, specifics are a tad fuzzy, but we are hearing that it will include DVI, USB, a plethora of EPG modes and "the ability to remove advertisements from recorded programs." Per usual, mum's the word on price and availability, but this is one Blu-ray recorder that we hope makes it stateside.

sure some HK gear is i the high end range but it is all utterly overpriced and under speced compared to Denon and even Onkyo usually. I would say go Denon or Marantz for the BDplayer if you want a high end one. just go on ebay and look at the value of used dvd players! there are denons that can retain their value!
I agree about Denon being better speced. But it's still good to have another choice of company to purchase from if you so desire.
Super.. more $1000+ Blu-Ray players..
as we all already know
Blu-Ray = niche
HD DVD = mainstream
yep, it's sooo mainstream that a whopping 18% of the HD buyers buy it's movies!!! man, if only bluray weren't swallowing up over 80% every week...
yeah.. of the 3% of market. You know, that's CALLED NICHE.
There's still 97% of consumers who will vote with their wallet and not their ass for brains.
They are both niche for the time being. But had things been the other way for support, HD DVD would have gone mainstream much faster.
No interest in this player, already got my PS3.
damn nfinity you are pretty damn annoying.
Guys, seriously. Stop responding to him. There is literally no way he actually believed what he typed there. He has to have seen how defending his call of HD DVD as mainstream and Blu-ray as niche by saying that ALL OF HDM is niche was retarded. He absolutely has to know this, and it's just to get a rise out of everyone. This is officially the last post I make in response to this guy, and it's simply to implore you all IGNORE him. And Truth Teller. Just let them wallow in the lack of notoriety and they will go away. I hope.
Nfinity, If Blu Ray is only 3% of sales why do you even care? Why are you so irrationally hating on Blu Ray when your beloved HD DVD even has less sales?
Ok Nfinity, I will play your game; but I ask you this...
If Blu-Ray is Niche at 3%, then what is HD-DVD at 15-20% of that?
(Just a hint the answer would not be mainstream as you said above).
Yes, Blu-ray is more expensive, but it has also outsold HD-DVD in disc sales week after week. Call it a niche, but it's a growing one...and HD-DVD is a fading one. Don't call me a "paid shill" as I don't offer this post for any monetary gain, and don't call me a PS3 fanboy, because I don't even own a game console of any variety.
I just want a simple, non-rant reply to my question.
Nobody is denying that Blu-ray has more sales. Those were fueled by discounts, BOGOs, free giveaways and so on. Of course, I'm not going away from the fact that Blu-Ray as a format ultimately has more capable machines through PS3.
What annoys me is this campaign that HD DVD is dead and needs to be destroyed.
Blu-Rays is POSITIONED with their prices as niche. Meaning that only some percentage of people will be able to afford it. And you can see that by the prices of new units announced.
Not one player announced, especially Profile 2.0 are $600+. This has NICHE written all over it. How they are trying to introduce mainstream to this?
They'll sell players to the rest of the consumers as much as they have them at $250 that are already obsolete.
Unlike Blu-Ray, HD DVD really doesn't need improvements. It's almost perfect. The only thing needed is the 51gb discs that is obviously approved and is coming but due to HD DVD Group again being more consumer oriented they want to make sure that people who buy discs like this can play them with no problems unlike Blu-ray players and quite a few movie problems.
The brand support is there.. Toshiba, Samsung, LG, Microsoft.. they all offer HD DVD playback equipped devices.. in computer industry there are also Nec and Plextor alongside Samsung and LG who offer hybrid drives for affordable prices. This is the step in right direction.
Instead of yelling screw over 1+ consumers and growing by trying to limit them with content, the right thing to do is make a transition to either publish everything on both like game publishers do with game consoles or to make cheaper hybrid standalones like Samsung and LG are doing.
Personally I think that by the end of this year it will become very evident that dual format for HD is here to stay and those who have more money can buy Blu-Ray out of perception that it might be better. Of course we all know that's not true but hey, it's their money.
The reason why HD DVD is mainstream and Blu-Ray is not is their business model and approach to pricing. Simple. HD DVD is equipped with mass production capability, it doesn't take a lot of money for replicators, the disc replication is cheaper, it's better transitional tool for consumers to go from SD to HD and you actually get to play your HD DVDs on your DVD player. In addition it's very cheap, fully compatible and future proof as it guarantees every upcoming disc to be fully featured for the money you pay for it.
I think I made it clear for you.
Is this Harman Kardon backing BD, or Harman International backing BD? While this company does not make much video stuff, they are massive and may be very influential depending on where they decide to go.
Good point, Ken. Ultimately I think this will be reflected across the Harman brands. Most likely candidates that spring to mind are Lexicon and Mark Levinson (no bargains prices there, for sure!).
Well I wouldn't get this player at all, there are better choices for less money. However, it's nice to see more CHOICE and VARIETY in blu-ray players. Don't like your Sony? Get a Panasonic. Don't like your Panasonic? Get a Sharp. And so on and so forth.
Unlike HD-DVD, where if you don't like your Toshiba HD-DVD player you can always buy............ wait for it............ a TOSHIBA HD-DVD player to replace it! Don't like that Toshiba HD-DVD player? Well just sell that one on eBay and get yourself another brand spankin' new TOSHIBA HD-DVD player! OMG!
While your premise is correct, the problem is that all HDDVD players work as intended with the full, complete HDDVD spec.
That couldn't be farther from the truth for BRD players. They haven't finished the spec, and the avialable players ALL (yes including the PS3) have their problems (no IR on/off, lacks some audio codecs in spec, etc.).
Point being, I had personally rather have one high quality, low cost choice than a bunch of low quality high cost choices.
AND back to the article: Are you really "competeing" when you come in late with an overpriced product? Isn't this a bit like saying that the Mustang GT priced at 70k is competing with the Corvette z06 at 60k?
Hey, nfinity... I've been offering a wager to you for a long time (especially, when you said "I BET... HD-DVD will win".
You still up for that wager? Name your price. Name your terms. BD will win, HD-DVD will give up.
First, you personally made a big deal out of the HD-DVD vs BD "weekly tallies". You posted MORE THAN ANYONE on how HD-DVD was improving against BD.
NOT ONCE... Not FUCKING once, in those early posts, did you compare HD-DVD to standard DVD.
Now, when BD has slaughtered HD-DVD... you finally, and pathetically, start comparing all HD media to SD.
Uh... what? Hello? What about your own PERSONAL posts? You conveniently forget them.
Wow.
I hope you eventually get enough lunch money from mommy to actually BUY a player this year.
Of course, it will probably be HD-DVD, since they'll literally pay your dumb ass to buy one.
Toshiba is the ONLY HD-DVD hardware supporter. What's wrong with this picture? LOL
Universal announced only approx 20 titles will be released on HD-DVD for 2008...OUCH!!!
R.I.P. HD-DUD

and I'm not sure you understand that it's clear that Blu-Ray has somewhat more movies.
But for $120 and fully featured players.. EVERY consumer who even doesn't have a lot of money will enjoy the HD.
You can surely go ahead go and buy a $400+. Nobody is stopping you.
I never said that Blu-Ray needs to die. I just pointed out that HD DVD offers significant value to a consumer.
There is room for both, some people who think that Blu-Ray better can get it for $400-$500 and up.. those who want to enjoy movies in pristine quality with cool features and dirty cheap players will pick HD DVD.
It's all very simple. In the long run as user base grows movies will be available on both just as in game industry. No difference.
Nfinity
HDPurist wrote Universal, not HD DVD. Please read correctly before going off on a rant.
"Universal announced only approx 20 titles will be released on HD-DVD for 2008...OUCH!!!"
If I remember correctly that was Universal (Australia).
http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/02/05/universal-pictures-australasia-releasing-20-hd-dvd-titles-in-200/
Universal(U.S.) is different from Universal (Australia). Notice the continent change?
Nfinity is a stupid foolish anyoing blind desperate fanboy on a good day but i'm getting used to it.
This pissing match is all well and good but what does it have to do with the HK player???
Personally i like HK stuff, i have a HK dvd player, AV unit and Surround speaker set. I'd be interested to see the specs on this, particularly if it's 1.1 or 2.0? If they incorporate some of their proprietary upscaling (which is always good) it could be better choice than something like the panny BDP50.
Is this player at least profile 2.0 compliant? They should provide the information as it is an important factor to many potential blu-ray buyers. If it is not 2.0 compliant, they will only sell a few of them.
Nfinity,
I've sat on the sidelines long enough listening to you spew your ignorance and embarrass yourself. Regarding $1,000 Blu Ray Players, there are several manufactures releasing a variety of players hitting a multitude of price ranges. If you cannot afford BD, then don't buy it. I am sick of these winning HD DVD fan boys hanging their hat on price; well what did price get you, a failed format!
I have the means to buy a $1,000 player and when Pioneer releases a fully spec'ed Elite player, I will be first in line. That will be my third Blu Ray player to compliment my four HDTV's.
You shop and Wal Mart, I choose to spend my money elsewhere on the finer things. Crap is crap no matter the cost. To quote Ted Knight in Caddyshack "The world needs ditch diggers too." And he is right, I need some one to pick up my garbage on Thursdays and shine my shoes before my business meetings. Nfinity, you are more than welcome to perform any of those tasks to make a few extra bucks to save up for your new PS3. You know you want one.
--Word
Hey buddy, just because some people think blu-ray player is not worth $1,000 does not mean they don't have money. Keep that in your thick skull. I can afford you to become my assistant.
rg23,
Nfinity makes it sound like you have to spend $1000 to get a 2.0 Blu which is not true; the PS3 is being updated soon to 2.0 which is the player most Blu owners have so they'll all be 2.0 when the firmware is released and that's why everyone reccomends you buy a 2.0 player or a PS3. Not to mention that if you have a 1.0 or 1.1 player, you can play ANY Blu movie but you would be missing out on the bonus features/content so its not as big an issue as he presents it to be. My 1st DVD player (one of the 1st ones released) can't play lots of newer DVDs at all which is much worse than this but once it becomes main stream, people will have more than 1 plaer in the home. DVD players include so many new features over the years so this isn't something new to te industry.
He also complains that people can't afford Blu and HD-DVD is closer to DVD prices.
justjayn's comment is to Nfinity, not to everyone and Nfinity has a long history of rediculous comments so some of the thrashing he gets is built up from other posts about the format war.
At the end of the day, Toshiba's biggest mistake was this: they needed other companies to make HD-DVD stand alone players. Same thing happened to Beta, JVC allowed other companies to make VHS players so they took off. So how many companies make Blu players? How many make HD-DVD? The only reason why HD-DVD is not having the plug pulled from its life support system in its death bed is because Paramount and Universal haven't started making Blu movies. Universal is not tied down to exclusive agreements and Paramount/Dreamworks has an escape cluase. While they might not change sides right away we can expect them to go dual format based on sales numbers and Blu's growing support group.
So to keep preaching HD-DVD is really sad at this point and i'd expect someone like Nfinity to claim HD-DVD is still not dead when Toshiba raises the white flag. He'll prob start a petition to bring it back from the dead. I for one can't wait to see his reaction when it's 100% over, till then i laugh at his posts and correct them when I have time to prevent people that might be new to the format war being mislead by him.
@xdragon
There is a difference in saying words like HDbots or Blubots. Saying all HD DVD supporters are poor and shop at Walmart is a different story. That is ignorance. If justjayn has beef with Nfinity then he should directly address it with Infinity.
So you just expect for Nfinity to say, yes blu-ray is better? He is a fan of HD DVD. What is wrong with that? If the situation is reversed, I bet many blu-ray fans will be doing the same thing.
I agree with you that to say "all" is wrong; I was saying that I beleieve his comment was directed to Nfinity and not to all HD-DVD supporters.
As for Nfinity, I don't expect him to say Blu is better if he prefers HD-DVD, that's a choice, but hhis comments are stated as facts and they are inaccurate even with his sources contradictiing his own comments, its frustrating as hell regardless of your format preference and this happens in the high 90%ages of his comments.
You can't just say things that aren't true and expect to get away with it or even twist comments to distort the meaning to suite his preference.
I bet you can get a betamax machine for under $400, maybe you can even sync it to your HD DVD.
# Nifty
The Dynamic HD features.... well personally I find it absolutely useless and wouldn't like it for BD either. I want to watch a movie in HD and thats it. Hmm, too bad that buyers possibly has to waste extra money on these features (maybe the players or movies could be cheaper without). I'd rather buy the media stripped down to the movie itself and then rip it to a future HD movie home database storage solution.
I'm going to sum up the comments section for the next guy:
"HATE HATE HATE, WHINE, I'm RICHER THAN YOU, HATE HATE."
Ok, let me just put it this way for you all:
Right now you can get a 1080p player and a library of 150 movies on Amazon for really cheap. In fact, if you were going to actually purchase all the movies we have been kicking around here, the amount you save on buying an HD DVD player and the movies on HD DVD that are also going to be on Blu-Ray will probably make up the cost difference of a BD player. At the cost of $120 for the player, and $15 for the movies (compared to $30 for the BD movies), buying the player and all 150 titles will cost $2370, compare to $4500 for BD discs alone.
Of course, you probably do not want 150 movies if you even own that many. So lets say you'd want twenty. Thats $300 in movies on HD DVD and another $120 for the player. Or $420. A BD player will cost you at least $400 ($399.99) right now, and 20 movies $600.
So lets say you buy the HD DVD player and get all the movies that are on it plus what will be on Blu-Ray, which offers (as far as the end consumer is concerned) the same video and audio quality (storage capacity is not even met on these discs yet). As I have stated, 150 movies plus player is $2370. Equivalent number of movies on BD (without player) is $4500. Hence, someone could actually buy an HD DVD player, watch plenty of movies for a long time, still have incredible visual and audio quality, and have money left over to buy a BD player when the prices come down.
The HD DVD will never sit on your shelf with Beta Max (until we all get HD VOD and discs go away completely). In fact someone would be quite happy purchasing it right now. And get plenty of usage.
