No eric, LG and Philips are not the same company. They created an alliance a few years ago to produce flat-panel LCD screens, thats why LG makes more LCD screens than anyone else: LG and Philips tallies are combined.
The truth though is that both companies do still offer vastly different products even if they use the same LCD screens (as base parts). Its the same for Samsung and Sony, who build their 40", 46", and 52" screens at the same factory in Mexico.
But remember, these are only the "screens." The motherboards, technology, speakers and finish are all actually assembled with the screens at a different location buy each company. So in the XBR4 and 69F from respective companies, both use the same LCD screen, but different motherboards, speakers, software engines, versions of their 120hertz tech, and so on.
For the same reason, LG screens have a 5ms response time when Philips has a 8ms. Same LCD screen, different TV due to final assembly differences.
