Some of the statements are not necessary. I have been with blu-ray since day one, but when a team loses, if we have any empathy, we shake their hand and wish them well and tell them "good job", which I think they did with hd-dvd (except for their promotion department, which I think lost the war for them). The hd-dvd group had their s**t together with the players, that's for sure, pricing and finalized players were way ahead of blu-ray. So let's give some credit to Toshiba and it would be nice if we could wish them well instead of telling them to "get this over with already."

mntwister

Comments on Announcement of HD DVD's death expected in short order (duh)

Empathy to HD DVD? Toshiba didn't do a "good job". After blowing their early opportunities to corner the market, they took a punt on selling ultra cheap high def disc players in the hope povs would win the day for them. Its like Mike Huckabee syndrome. Give up already-McCain will win. At least Romney did the dlegate math and conceded like a gentlemen. Had Toshiba conceded like a gentlemen and not drug it on, nor had they deceive countless thousands of soccor moms into buying a format they already knew was dead wouldnt have much new HD content(the reason unsuspecting, trustung people bought it)and were no doublt already in an exit strategy. I got an HDTV a few weeks ago and I have been dying to get into some HD movies. While my DTV HR21 has been great, I would like to pick a format and move on. This is making it a lot easier. And, with one format and a lot of companies willing to move on it (plus the lesson they're learning on alienating customers) we should get a wide variety in selection.

Now, the real issue: what's the quality variance going to be like? Should you stick with the manufacturers that have been working this so far, or see what the newcomers bring? You even managed to get on Digg, bravo.

Looking forward to BD prices falling as they get serious about tackling their real competition, DVD. I know what some of you will say, but it's true; just as DVD had to conquer VHS, BD will have to conquer DVD. The average person isn't jumping as quick as people would like, else you wouldn't have seen the massive HD DVD hatchet job. Two months from "still up in the air, waiting on Fox's decision" to "get on with it Toshiba, it's completely, totally dead," wow. Rushing to get it killed before the EU antitrust hearings, are we?

Not that I particularly mind; I didn't care one way or another until I bought an HD DVD player, and even then, I wasn't all that excited about getting HD discs. The only reason I flamed people on this board was because so many of y'all had to gloat about "idiots" like me who bought into a so obviously stillborn format. Except that it wasn't obvious, but that's neither here nor there.

Hopefully they'll do right by customers just as Sony did right by Betamax customers. They probably won't, and it'll be an understandable business decision, but I wish someone would. Won't affect me too badly as I didn't get many titles, and not really any that I want to hold on to longer than the player lasts (if that long) but some people might. I'd just as soon get a BD player as soon as it makes sense to get one, and enjoy some high-def movies. Until it makes sense to go that route, I do have a few high-def movies I can enjoy. :->

regeya

Comments on Announcement of HD DVD's death expected in short order (duh)

What about the five free movies I still haven't gotten?
