Shortly after hearing that the relatively unknown studio HDScape cranked up a HD DVD / Blu-ray
exchange program, along comes Edion to show the world how this ordeal should
really be handled. Said firm owns several chains of electronics stores in Japan, and reportedly, it's allowing customers who purchased one of seven HD DVD players to return them for Blu-ray decks. Apparently, it's allowing them to put the purchase price of the HD DVD unit towards the Blu-ray player, and if their player was somehow more expensive than the BD player they're eying, a refund for the difference will actually be doled out. We'll be honest -- this does seem a bit too good to be true, but we are hearing that the courtesy expires at the end of March. 'Tis a shame this will never happen on this side of the world. If this were an American store, I would give all my business to them.
As I understand it, the sale of HD DVD players in Japan was abysmally low, so they probably won't have to exchange many. Great PR, free press, and not so much expended.
damn! this is a good deal indeed. if it were to come here i would buy one hd dvd player and then change it for a blu ray!

Please explain why you would spend money on a HD-DVD player, and then get the exact amount of money you spent on the HD-DVD player towards a Blu-Ray player...why not just use the money to get a Blu-Ray player in the first place? I also am hoping that your sarcasm didn't transfer well to text.
lol, they're not just giving a free Blu-Ray for HD DVD player it's an exchange program. Pay $100 for HD DVD you get $100 towards the purchase of a Blu-Ray.
That is STRONG. And unlike BB and CC, the sales force probably knows what the hell they're talking about.
Circuit City is relaxing their 30 day return. Allowing people that bought toshiba hd dvd players to return them for exchange or refund even if "several" months old.
They can do this because Japan loves Sony for the obvious reason, so they all stuck with BluRay for the most part so not that many will be returned.
Oh and SAMe: There's usually one or two smart people in those stores, I mean, I was one of them until I was fired. Guess why?

Best Buy let a friend of return there two month old Toshiba HD DVD player, and apply to money to a PS3.

Pretty good deal, for both the company and the consumer. No doubt they'll be able to claim the losses on the returned players, not to mention make booku cash on those who leave with blu-ray players AND an armful of blu-ray discs (which you know they will).

Circuit City is doing this exact deal nationwide as long as you have your receipt or they can look up your receipt.
Circuit City is doing this same exact deal for anyone that asks. Toshiba is taking back all HD-DVD players. As long as you have a receipt, you can get the money put towards a BD player. Smart move considering the BD players are likely more expensive.
DAMN! Why didnt I buy mine at CC? Hope Best Buy follows suit.
Circuit City kindly gave me store credit on Weds for my Toshiba HDDVD player I purchased just before Christmas. I applied the credit towards a Playstation 3. Best Buy allowed me to return over $100 in HD DVDs purchased in early Jan that same day. Again store credit applied to Blu Ray discs. I consider myself VERY lucky! The only HD disc I didn't return was a copy of Blade Runner and several "free discs" that came c my player. I sold those for cheap to a colleague who plans to keep his HD player for awhile yet. I just wanted to try to exchange while they still were maybe willing and not end up with the next Betamax. So far I really like the Playstation 3. Only wish I could have found an 80GB version (none of the CC's around or on their website seem to have them) as those played SACDs which I have a large classical CD collection of--oh well! So I recc. asking the place you purchased your player at if you want to swap. Worst thing they can say is no!

I won't lie: I bought mine at Wal-Mart (hey, it was ultra-cheap), so I'm guessing I'm just stuck with mine...but if they were to extend their return policy, I probably would do that, and would gladly take a gift card if that were the only way to do it.
Thing is, I don't see how I could spend that toward a Blu-Ray player there, since the local stores seem to have pulled ALL high-def discs and players, not just HD DVD.
