MGM movies, Disney TV shows now available on Xbox Live Marketplace
As promised, those MGM flicks have hit Xbox Live Marketplace, satisfying our deep seated need for downloadable HD Rocky and James Bond flicks. Disney's releases popped up on the service last week, however since High School Musical 2 was a TV movie, its available only for purchase, at a cost of 1920 MS points ($23.99), the same as the Blu-ray version on Amazon. Its hard to make the argument the Xbox 360 doesn't need a Blu-ray add-on if HD movies cost the same amount for a lower quality (and more restrictively DRM'd) edition, not that we were really looking forward to downloading all 720p's of Zac Efron or n e thing.[Via Gamerscore Blog]

While I could care less about High School Musical 2, I think this sets a bad president. A digital download for $23.99 is a total waste of money. For that price, I want my movies on a physical disc. This is unacceptable. And just shows that Disney doesn't get Video Marketplace.
i don't think this is disney, i think it's M$ setting the price. but i could be wrong.
not the first time something on xbox live, or xbox in general being overpriced. (hello $100 wifi and 20gb HD add ons.)
While it is way too expensive... It is considered a TV show and therefore CAN be transferred to a PC for backup and (correct me if I'm wrong) can be burned to a disc.
Who in their right minds would pay full price for a low quality download that is locked and only plays on one device? Pure greed is something VOD is going to have to overcome if it stands any chance of supplanting physical disks.
That's a pretty rich statement coming from a BR fanboy!
Meaning what please? Are you arguing VOD isn't any of those things or are you just going to throw ad hominems around?
If the 360 had a HDDVD and Bluray add on it would be the best device on the market. Games, BR, HDDVD, Digital Download, Video Chat and Movie Rentals on one device. Damn that would be great.
...and if they release just a few more add-ons you'd have enough bricks to build yourself a castle!
or a sega cd 32x killer!
The PS3 is probably a better media device than the 360. You can copy and play movies from your HDD, or an external USB drive for starts. It's missing movie rentals but I would be surprised if Sony doesn't have something for this before the year is out.
DrXym..again you show that you are completely ignorant.
Xbox 360 CAN Copy the files from Xbox 360 to any external USB device or connected PC. You can play movies and content FROM external drives connected to the Xbox 360 as well as stream them from Media Center.

Copy, Move, and Delete Items from Your Hard Drive
You can copy items on your hard drive to a memory unit, a connected PC, or a connected USB device. You can also free space on your hard drive by deleting items.
To copy or move an item from your hard drive to a connected device:
1. With the hard drive attached to the Xbox 360 console, turn the console on.
2. Go to the System area of the Xbox Dashboard and select Memory.
3. Select your hard drive.
4. Select the category of the item you want to copy or move.
* To copy or move videos, trailers, and demos, select either Videos and Trailers or Demos, then select the item.
* To copy or move gamer profiles, gamer pictures, and themes, select either Gamer Profiles, Gamer Pictures, or Themes, select the owner of the item, then select the item.
* To copy or move all content associated with a game, select Games, select the owner of the content, choose the game, select Game Options (Y), then select the item.
* To copy or move just one item for a game (such as a single saved game), select Games, select the owner of the content, select the game, then select the item.
5. Select Copy or Move.

You don't know shit.
Xbox 360 is a device that does EVERYTHING PS3 does and has one INCREDIBLE HD movie / game service to boot! Oh and it's cheaper then PS3.. Who needs a Blu-Ray on Xbox 360.. I sure don't. HD DVD add-on was a cheap thing, they sure ain't gonna make a $300 add-on that nobody will buy especially when HD downloads are already kicking ASS on Xbox Live.. I watch ALL new releases in HD from my Xbox 360 and it takes like 4-5 minutes to start watching. Talk about kick ass service.
The quality?! AWESOME! for 99% of people.
But didn't you hear? Downloads are the future!!!
Every HD DVD die hard has blown off Blu-ray in favour of VOD or upscaling!
Maybe they chose this because it's sooooo consumer friendly!!!
WTF? And you people tell HD DVD owners that THEY'RE the ones who need to "get over it" and "let it go"?? Sheesh.
MS typically says that the creators of content are responsible for pricing, but that has been proven to be a lie many times - such as when game developers wanted to put out FREE maps, but MS required that they cost money initially and could only go to a free state later. Part of it is MS managing overall pricing - if no one puts out new stuff for free, those devs who want to gouge for everything don't seem substantially different.
But $24 for a digital download basically confirms for me that unless multiple individuals remove multiple heads from multiple orifices, digital downloads will go the way of Divx drives.
You are confusing two different things. Hollywood sets the price on their media. That is why Apple has a similar price to the Xbox 360.
You are talking about Microsoft right as a publisher of certain games to ask for a price for the content they put out. Microsoft does not set the price for content other publishers put out. They do have guidelines, and they have allowed maps to become free after a certain period of time. They also make maps that are available free for say the PS3 available at the same price on the Xbox360.
Yea how dare MS give people a chose. F them. They suck! Im so glad my PS3 has backwards compat because none that are on the market now does.
If you dont want the add on dont buy it. Simple.
Choice
I am curious where Richard got the part about the 1920 MS points since there isn't a mention of any of that in any of the links posted. Most of the movies are only available for rent not for purchase.
I turned on my Xbox 360 and looked. AFAIK, its the highest price for anything on the marketplace right now.
Thanks for the reply Richard. I am at work so I couldn't check. Could you do a follow up on this since this seems to be a change in their business model. As far as I know this would be the only movie they are allowing you to buy instead of rent. Is this an ongoing thing or is this a special case?
actually if you look in the family guy section of the tv video marketplace there is some family guy movie you can buy. i forget the name of it but it has stewie on the front cover and costs like 15 dollars i believe. i guess since you are purchasing it, they put it in the tv section rather than the movie section because you can ONLY RENT everything in the movie video marketpalce section.
ps:
i am also pretty sure that movie is NOT in hd. so you are paying about what you would pay for a new release dvd at certain places.....
I have a PS3 its not a bad system like some fanboys say it is. Its starting to come into its own with games like Drake, R&C and RFOM. The Br functions great. The online could use work but im use to Live and would gladly pay for an upgrade. Maybe that sims-esc thing they are working on will help but im not into that kind of game.
As for the topic of this thread i would love to have a BR add on for my 360. It with a HDDVD player and all the other stuff I mentioned would be a great system. Yes there would be one more thing to sit beside the system but I have space. Others may not. What would be perfect is a dual player add on that is about the price of the HDDVD player (doubt it). That would take care of the space issue. Now imagine a netflix type of service with the BR and HDDVD add on. That would make one nice entertainment system.
Orionz Dream = Live
OrionzDream PS3 online.
^I agree with this guy. That would be an awesome entertainment device if Microsoft ever did do it.
Well if this is the future of digital distribution to own (not just rent) I really fail to see what BD has to worry about.
Nfinity, perhaps you'll point out where on here it says you can play your own video content from the HDD?
http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/media/viewvideo.htm
Now maybe they've changed the situation somewhat in a new update, in which case perhaps you can state emphatically that you can play AVC and DiVX content from your HDD? Cutting and pasting a page telling me you copy files *from* the HDD is utterly beside the point.
As for the 360 being cheaper, no it isn't unless you're talking about a 20Gb or the 0Gb model. Which sort of defeats the point of your silly argument. It's also interesting to hear you babbling about downloadable content when you've spent the last months ranting about HD DVD. I guess all your bullshit about 51Gb triple layer discs and interactive features etc. meant nothing if you're prepared to settle for some shitty featureless 5Gb download. Not only that, but a download locked to one device made by one manufacturer. So much for your previous arguments. I know consistency isn't one of your strongpoints, but this is hypocritical even for you.
