As for why to use anything other then the PS3 as a Blu-ray that's just personal choice. I own one but I don't really care for its aesthetics TBH. For some people what it looks like in their HT stack might be very important. Or they just want a player and not a game system that can play Blu-ray. This is Sony's way of keeping the Real BluRay players Price up, while keeping the PS3 as the cheapest BluRay player. Sony is playin games in the console war and is how they won the HDM war..

In any case, I'm sure there will be a good number of BD-live players well under the PS3's price during the holiday sales period at the latest, if you can wait that long. On the other hand, I can also wholeheartedly recommend the PS3 without reservations if you want to go that route. The current $400 is way too expensive considering that BD has been out almost two years, not to mention that BD discs are still like $35 each at retail.

Sony is going to mine the deeper pockets of the early adopter crowd for a while yet before dropping the player & disc prices to a level the rest of us can afford.

It took -3- years for the DVD players, initially beyond the $1000 range, to reach the $100ish/unit range for cheapo brands (from 1997 to 2000).

video collector = purchase market, not rental or video download

purchase market = committed consumers who will spend big $$$ over time

$$$ + video collector = market who sees player as insignificant cost in comparison with collection and expect to buy multiple players on the path to complete functionality.
