Poll: How many HD channels do you have?

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
The best part is that I'm not even supposed to get the 10 that I do - according to my cable company! Muahahahaha!
DirecTV, 90 and counting. Realistically I get about 50 national and local HDs, the rest are PPV and RSNs.
Here is exactly what you can get with DirecTV from Albany for HD channels. I get 53, real 24-hour HD channels in Albany with Choice Xtra, Extra Pack and HD Access (about $65/mo). Details: http://albanyhdtv.proboards18.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Voom&thread=1204399794&page=1
I get 45 and I don't pay a lick for anyone of them.
Well, I don't HBO, Showtime, etc. So I get 41 then. Still, pretty damn good.
I have no idea right now to my answer to the poll. Gonna have to wait until I get back home.
What I want to know though, is what cable/dvr system (if its not just a photoshop image) the picture here is from?! My Comcast station guide is puke-ish by comparison; this one looks clean, with some awesomeness thrown in.
Help me out!
the screenshot is from BeyondTV, by Snapstream. I use it for recording HDTV off-air (from an antenna). It is also compatible with some satellite TV setups (though not in HD as I recall) as well as with some of the cable tuners that support clear QAM. It can't deal with encrypted digital cable, so forget about using it to record HD off of cable for anything other than the regular broadcast channels, since the typical cable system encrypts those channels.
IMO, best guide UI for recording all types HD off of cable is probably still TiVo's. TiVos support cable card so can handle the encrypted streams.
We have 41, including movie channels, but not including HD PPV, and the 2 new HD channels that go with NBA and NHL packages.
TW Albany.
It's 41 channels if you subscribe to the HD Tier, the Sports Tier, and EVERY movie channel. You're talking almost $150/mo for 41HD in Albany with set-top boxes. Details: http://albanyhdtv.proboards18.com/index.cgi?board=Voom&action=display&thread=1204399794&page=1#1204400937
Does a channel that calls itself "HD" but never actually shows any HD, count? How about those that take SD and mangle it to fool people who think that "widescreen" is HD?
I guess what I'm saying is that DirecTV has some 60 commonly available channels marked "HD", but maybe 35-40 of them actually show hi def.
same here! alot of channels that say HD never send HD signal but it says HD on it lol
yay for fishbowl effect!!!!!
for some reason i get 2 versions (different channel numbers) for locals, so i had to pick which one to dvr Lost on....
Also I get a bunch of Voom channels on top of the regular dish network ones (treasure, rave, anima, hdnet news, monster, etc) but I don't know why, because I didn't ask for those... I'm not paying for it.
TONS of channels I don't need... like a grip of HD-NHL channels which usually have a static image saying "tune in when programming is available" or some such.
Time Warner Cable, Los Angeles, 23 HD channels including locals
Asheville, NC on Charter Cable's HD Tier (19 Full Time HD, 3 Part-Time HD):
HDNet, HDMovieNet, ESPNHD, ESPN2HD, HD Theater, HBO HD, Showtime HD, Cinemax HD, WLOS (ABC), WYFF (NBC), WHNS (FOX), WSPA (CBS), WUNF (PBS; Part-time; 8 p.m.-11 p.m. only), Starz HD, MHD, Universal HD, Golf/Versus HD, A&E HD, History Channel HD, TNT HD, FSN South HD (only when HD Games are aired by FSN) and HDPPV (part-time Charter HD PPV Service)
Comcast Digital Cable from Bolton, CT. Thirty including locals and discounting a duplicate of HBO HD.
3-4 here in SPFLD, MO over broadcast. My fav so far is PBSDT. NOVA is awesome digital.
Here's the relative question. Other than movie channels, how many channels do you have that offer 50% or more HD programming?
How is that question really relevant? Most HD channels have their prime programming in HD, which is what really matters. Enough that with DirecTV, 90% of the shows I watch are in HD. Do I care if a channel shows 18 hours of SD during the day? Not at all, because I'm not watching.
VOOM channels are all HD, all the time... but they do tend to repeat programming...
I get a kick out of all the commercials that are in HD... i remember when i first saw a commercial in HD, i didn't want to skip it because it looked so good.
Of my non-HD believers at work (those who havent seen it yet and don't know what they're missing) I try to tell them that my commercials look way better than dvds, which always gets a puzzled look.
Have DirecTV Premier. Lots of channels.
I've gotten rid of all pay TV and have dual OTA HD tuners and use Vista Media Center and my Xbox 360 as a Media Center Extender. Looks great, sounds great, but I only have the 6 OTA HD channels.
Once the DirecTV HDPC20 is out (hopefully before football season!), and maybe by then DirecTV will have created an HD-only service like DISH has, I hope to get two of those and have a bada$$ system.
Wow, I sound like Barack Obama with all that hope...
I just bought my first HDTV today (yay!) and it couldn't find any HD channels while scanning. I live in Raleigh, NC, so if anyone else lives there, could you give me some tips on picking up channels? The TV I bought (Sony KDF-37H1000) is supposed to have a HD tuner, do I need to connect an antenna or something?
Yes, you definitely need to connect an antenna to get HD channels over the air. Start out with a simple set of rabbit ears. If that's not satisfactory, you may need to go with a big attic or roof antenna. Whichever antenna you choose, point it in all sorts of different directions, and then re-scan for channels and see what you get.
I have around 30 HD channels. I see a lot of channels available in HD that I would like to have, but so far my cable company has yet to add any of them.
To me, the big question is how many of these channels are worth watching? To be honest, I only have 2 shows I watch in HD and they are both on different networks.
I have Comcast out of Romeoville, Il.
I think we get around 11-20, maybe a few more. This isn't counting HBO's and such since I don't get them anymore..
However, there are about 5 or 6 that are worth watching. And fewer than that that offer only HD programming.
Where I live you can only receive somewhat like 2 HD Channels. But with Premiere HD and Sky HD over Sat I got a total of 17 Channels.
We have 19 here in Seattle on Comcast with 8 more this month. THe Comcast ondemand is pretty awesome. We just watched 300 and are now going to watch the 10 episodes of the Tudors in hd ondemand. there are tons of cool movies and network shows in hd commercial free and it wont take up my dvr space. Later we are going to watch Braveheart on demand-all for free. Say what you will about ondemand but it has a lot of free hd good stuff on it.

Trust me, if there were any HD channels on offer in New Zealand, I'd have them all.
