Like the blog post said, it's the HD Extra's package. D* gave us free 3 months, and I guess they just ended it. Sorta sucks they're charging for those channels, but they are commercial free so I can see the $5 charge. Like the other poster said, HDNet does have great movies and like the other poster said I didn't watch anything on MGM-HD yet besides Rocky IV. Had no idea if commercials were in it or not, but was please to see they weren't. I like seeing repeats of Friday Night Lights and Jericho on UHD, but I'm not sure if that's worth $5. So it really boils down to if HDNet is worth the $5. They do show really good movies, so I have to debate if it really is or not.

I'd love to see TNT do a commercial/edit free movie channel and add that to this package, that'd be worth it. Hate seeing great movies edited and commercials in it. And TNT does show really good movies in HD that look really good. Too bad I can't bring myself to watching it lol.

Zach

Comments on Reminder: DirecTV's free HD Extra Pack is up

I am seriously confused, and I am betting it is just my ignorance on the situation. I've been getting HDnet and HDnet since 2003 and that did not change when I recently upgraded my SD DVRs to a pair of HR21 HD DVR and new five LNB dish. I continue to get HDnet and HDnet Movies as part of the HD Package, but the other three I do not.

BTW, I have never gotten those 'other three' for free so saying the free part is up is even more of a mystery.

GhostDoggy

Comments on Reminder: DirecTV's free HD Extra Pack is up

Sounds like the same bait and switch Crime Warner does. Their HDXtra package started out with 5 HD channels. It's now down to 3... but they did toss in a bunch of SD sports channels... the kind that really, really nobody watches.

AND it's more like 9 bucks, not 5. However, for the time being, it CAN be bundled with DVR for 15 (DVR alone is 10).

STILL, the ONLY way I deal withy this is to think of HDNet as a 2 channel premium (no commercials, no censoring). So, it's HBO, SHO, HDNet etc.

HDNet as a premium service is really worth it. I think over the past 6 months I watched more content on them than HO, or Starz. They also cover NASA... shuttle launches and inside the ISS in HD are fabulous in HD!

riverside_guy

Comments on Reminder: DirecTV's free HD Extra Pack is up

You missed the point entirely. The $11 a month the HD pack costs covers all HD channels, as long as you have their SD equivilant. Plus HD Net (it was originally gonna require the extra pack). So I get like 50 HD channels. If I wanted HD Net Movies, MGM HD, Smithsonian HD, Universal HD and Music HD I'd have to pay an extra $5 a month. This is because they don't have SD equivilants so they truely are extra, its also why HD Net almost got moved to this tier (they have no SD anchor). My earlier point (along with the point of another poster) was that ours shut off after they announced this new tier(30 days for me).

genaldar

Comments on Reminder: DirecTV's free HD Extra Pack is up

Just curious- how do they transfer these old movies to HD?
