Most local cable companies have committed to provide analog cable until 2010, thus obviating your need for a converter box. The DTV transition is only legislated for OTA signals, so many cable companies want to keep their analog customers happy and keep the analog signals flowing. However some local cable companies (I've heard some Comcast localities), may be eager to axe the analog channel to free up bandwith for more HD channels, and HD VOD (again Comcast). So I would say call your cable company, but who knows if the drone answering the phone even knows what the analog cut-off is all about, much less if you'll be affected. So sorry no help. Maybe pick up a box just in case? It's only ten bucks right?

ChickebSangwich

Comments on The quest for a DTV converter box

Geoffrey Sperl,
Not exactly, the FCC has mandated that all cable co's continue analog service, or hand out free STBs, for 3 years after the transition date.

The way you put it, makes it sounds like they have a choice in the matter.

Ben

Comments on The quest for a DTV converter box

Ben: Ahhh... But there are others - some with smart antenna and s-video ports - that make the research downright stupefying.

A few things to keep in mind:

1) Low-power stations are NOT affected by the mandate, so if you have a low-power station near you and you watch it, then you will need a box with analog pass-through to get that signal (or you can keep the current antenna attached to your TV and attach the converter box to a different input - if that's an option).

2) Canada does not transition until August of 2011, so those of us in northern border states who use OTA to get Canadian stations may still need analog pass-through for the next few years if their favorite Canadian station is not broadcasting digitally yet. I can't speak to Mexico, by the way, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have a different DTV transition date, too.

I've been using an Insigina (re-branded LG) box and cheapie RCA antenna ($10) I bought from Best Buy and, thus far, I'm impressed with the picture and reception. We have a huge problem in this country with 'entitlements' and people living well beyond their means. Is more welfare and thus higher taxes going to make those poor people wealthier? Of course not.

Let's take for example the Hurricane Katrina victims. There were hundreds of reports about these people who spent their "government issue debit cards" on frivolous crap like designer purses and breast implants when they SHOULD have been rebuilding their houses and lives. And now, the FEMA trailers that were provided with them aren't good enough because they have measurable levels of formaldehyde. Yeah? So does every other trailer you buy off the lot. Go look for yourself. They _all_ have warnings (usually in the bathroom) saying there is significant formaldehyde due to the materials and glue used during construction. But, because these people are 'entitled' to the trailers, it MUST be fixed. The people that actually paid retail for the travel trailers with formaldehyde get the big ol' shaft. More tax-payer money wasted on welfare.

Or lets consider the people who don't pay their bills, stupidly get into an ARM they can't afford and then get foreclosed on. What oh what to do? I have an idea... The government should freeze their rates so they have an equivalent mortgage to people who actually pay their bills! Great idea. Lets ignore the fact that they didn't qualify for a fixed-rate loan in the first place for a REASON. They don't pay their damn bills.

There's no incentive for being responsible anymore. Cable will switch to digital, I think more sooner than later. A clear signal from the National Cable & Telecommunications Association and the compromise with the FCC is what they aren’t saying. NCTA members agreed to provide over-the-air local broadcast channels to their subscribers in analog until 2012. The key phrase is "local broadcast". It says nothing about other channels that are now viewed in analog like CNN or Discovery and them staying analog until 2012. I've heard people from around the country say their cable provider has switched or is about switch to digital. It makes to much business sense for them not to, removing one analog channel frees up space for several digital channels.
