@ Richard S: Believe me, I get your drift -- this is pork. But the goverrnment should have dictated that televisions have both ntsc and atsc tuners a loooooonnnnnggggg time ago, and made an effort to tell people to hold off on electronics purchases. But then every manufacturer and every seller and every shipper would have been P.O.d, so that wouldn't fly either. I never heard about this 2 years ago when I upgraded from an older 19" set (that still worked fine) to a 27" CRT set with analog tuner. Had this been common knowledge I would have just waited for the flat screens with built in digital tuners and callled it a day. Am I a negligent citizen because I didn't know about the transition 2 years ago? No, and there is STILL a ton of misinformation out there. It's just SOP for how our government works. It has become a govenment OF the oil corporations & defense contractors, FOR the oil corporations & defense contractors and BY the oil corporations & defense contractors. The middle class be damned!
Back on post, at the other Richard : does your portable have any RF inputs? If not you're out of luck (I have a color casio I keep in an office drawer for emergencies which will be junk) Radio Shack has a cheap (by portable standards) portable with both tuners, but it's still the sale price of a 13" LCD for the home at $200!
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
