I wouldn't bother with The Golden Compass. It takes a good book and turned it into mush. Great effects but virtually every line is expository with no room at all for character development. It just feels all wrong. It needed to be at least 20-30 minutes longer. The abrupt "happy" ending also means that two key chapters in the book get flipped around to make it fit.
