Netflix site "temporarily unavailable," avid renters beside themselves
Although Netflix's site doesn't go down temporarily nearly as much as one particular fruit company, this isn't the first time we've seen the online rental outfit's website out of order. Granted, it's not like seeing the above image on its homepage is a frequent occurrence either, and it seems that many renters are at a loss for things to do on a Monday when they can't rearrange their queue. If we recall correctly, the last outage actually spanned close to a day, but here's to hoping you customers won't be forced to wait until Tuesday to fast-track From Justin to Kelly to number one on your list.
Update: As of 10:39PM ET (give or take a few minutes), Netflix is back in business. Thanks, Mr Bobby!

I am just amazed. This company depends entirely on the internet.
It's 2008, and they still don't have technology to have a back-up second website, when something goes wrong??
Ahh, MacPro with Blu ray!!, oh wait Engadget reports on other sites being down. (I'm not a any fanboy, mac user, open to all)
i hope they credit us the .48 cents we're out for not being able to View Instantly!!! lol
Wow, this is the first time I've seen their site down, and I've using using them for years. Maybe they've changed their minds and have decided to rent hd-dvd movies again. Well, at least that's the reason why I'd be canceling my account this month. I have a pretty good Blu-ray library already, but would like to watch some of the hd-dvd releases not yet available on Blu-ray. I'd have to stick with Blockbuster for the time being though.
I smell conspiracy here. I'll bet Blockbuster has waged an online war with them. j/k

"Update: Netflix spokesperson Steve Swasey on the outtage: "It's unanticipated and our engineers are working feverishly on it. We regret the inconvenience and appreciate the patience of our members."
ah, good.. i thought it was just me
Nah... that's what this is for:

I started a new Netflix sub last month and have been renting HD-DVDs only. Except for a couple of the movies .. I have never had to wait for any of them. I get them in one day. Turnaround is quick too - I put the disc in my mailbox ... USPS picks it up at 3pm ... next day at 7am I get an email from NetFlix that they received the disc. That same day they ship the next one out. The shipping center is in the same state ... takes 1 day to ship things.
Blockbuster has their shipping center in that same city. It sometimes takes 2 days to receive discs from them. Also, they never ack receipt of the disc until late in the afternoon ... and ship the replacement the day after ... so their discs take one day longer to arrive and one day longer to send replacement.
So I am sticking with NF.
Netflix treats you well when you first start up to keep you as a customer. If your rental activity is too high (for them), in a few months the throttling and "long waits" will kick in ...
They've really stopped that practice after they were caught doing it. I'm definitely in the "heavy user" category and haven't experienced any of that for years.
Clads is right. You keep up the pace you're on now and you'll be throttled in no time.
LOL... Look at the source code for the error message. They commented out the "but not to worry, our distribution centers are still sending and receiving DVDs." And put the new message up instead.
I guess that means no shipping today.
STILL down at 6pm CST ...man
It's 10:39pm Eastern time, and Netflix's website is back.
Make sure to update the article.
It's back, but you can't rate movies! No more ratings?!
If they bring back ratings then no harm no foul. However if they don't bring back ratings or some other way for me to keep track of what I have already rented versus what I have not viewed yet then I will be staring at this comment box and reminding myself that my opinion doesn't matter anyway.
the homepage is up, but everything else is down. Shame.
