I'm pretty sure they will take off because really, they already have. Most theaters that are installing at least one digital projector at one of their screens is then 3d capable. I know Carmike installed thousands of theaters with 3d projection systems for the release of Beowulf.
I saw Beowulf in 3d at a local rinky dink run down theater and it was a great experience (except for the fact that either the glasses were put together backwards or something was screwed up in the projection because it required wearing them upside down in order to get the proper effect.)
Now, what I would like to see is someone offering good quality glasses for purchase that are comfortable to wear and have better optics than the disposable ones that they hand out at the box office.
