I suspect a large portion of these complaints are from people with new HDTVs who are outraged that their 4:3 standard-def picture is pillar-boxed (with vertical black bars on the left and right) rather than filling the screen, thus giving them their "money's worth". Loud demands from the ignorant to get their SD in distorted, butt-ugly Stretch-O-Vision (tm), thereby magically tranforming it into HD, cannot be appeased by any means but compliance.
For those looking for a device strictly for reading, the new Kobo is a nice little option. It's small enough to slip into a pocket, can do more with a PDF than the competition, and at $129, it's $10 cheaper than both the Nook and Kindle WiFi.
