I was surprised when Sony of all people decided to allow DivX playback on the PS3... All I know is, I absolutely love the direction we're heading in.
I just don't get why anyone would spend that kind of money on the Denon without it being a full profile player, and why Denon did not allow for it to be upgradable via a firmware update for 2.0.
Maybe it can't be upgraded by a simple firmware cause it doesn't have an Ethernet port and 1GB of local storage, as both are mandatory for profile 2.0.
Profile 2.0 is not mandatory. I expect Denon will produce 1.1 and 2.0 profiles and you can pick which is best for you. I suspect many people wouldn't see the point of trailing ethernet cable across to their TV just to download some trailers and other things.
I think it's sad that DiVX has managed to takeover a standard (MPEG-4 Part 2 ASP) so much that companies actually seek to have their products DiVX certified. And if certification on my PS3 is anything to go by, it seems that movies are required to show a DiVX logo for a few seconds when they start.
If they have to get certified, I'd much prefer they got XVid certified. XVid appears to support be a superset of ASP profiles that DiVX does meaning better movie compatibility anyway.
