I certainly understand why Legend is so big, plus the PS3 owners are generally males who would buy Legend but not Enchanted. Still, I would have expected a bigger share for this movie. I have to say the quality of the Enchanted blu-ray is fantastic. The picture is among the best on blu-ray and the soundtrack with all of the effects and musical numbers is great demo material.

I also think what might have happened is that many people cannot afford 2 new releases in one week, so I think Enchanted will stay on the chart for some time.

mntwister

Comments on Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending March 30th, 2008

Is it just me or the numbers of Blu-Ray titles sold are getting lower and lower? If it wasn't for I'm Legend, overall sales are extremely poor.

It seems that people really don't want to buy expensive movies and players. It's not the price of the movies! It's the price of the blu-ray player and HD TV. It doesn't matter if the blu-ray is 25-30 if the TV is $1500 and the player is around $400 the sales of blu-ray will not be that high. People are much more willing to spend $25-$30 on a movie than to spend $1500 and $400 on the equipment. Once 1080p TV's and player drop in price, then we'll see a real grab on DVD's market share. .

jitty

Comments on Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending March 30th, 2008

I think it is just you.

I like bluray a lot but, if the number of titles getting sold is getting lower and lower and this week and they made up 8% of all media sales that implies other weeks they sold MORE and 8% of all media.

For them to already be selling near %10 of the big market is pretty amazing already considering that when the Warner announcement happened it was around 2% of sales for HD-DVD and BD combined.

joe

Comments on Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending March 30th, 2008

You would have to be a complete and utter moron to interpret a growth from 6% to 8% as "sales getting lower and lower". HDDVD fans are good at "hoovering"
2. Blu-ray is asking to be touched, but HD DVD fans are apparently too good
3. It failed because of studio support, which Blu-ray now has fully. Consumers aren't these in-depth thinkers you make them out to be (by the way, HDDVD fans could never buy a single Blu-ray disc and be fine). If Blu-ray becomes more prominent in stores, it simply will sell, which is what's starting to happen.

Resorting to launching an ad hominem attack against anyone who points the failure of your logic is a tactic I think you realize is unintelligent and doesn't convince anyone. If you're trying to rile people up though, then my hat is off to you because you do that quite well. You should work on presenting concise arguments without all of the shots you callously make, they work against you. If you have a valid argument, think about it and present it.

Saying Blu-ray has a low market share and therefor will never succeed is like arguing people want to drive gas cars because 99% of cars in the world operate on gas. You bring an once of fact and a pound of bile. You are unable to add anything to a conversation. No civilized person would read through your venom to see what you present.

People, like me, read things here to get an over view of video trends because its a hobby. The second you post on a forum it becomes a toxic name calling match where any chance of this being a pleasant read is long gone.

You have freedom of speech and can say what you want as poorly and rudely as you want. I just wish you wouldn't say it here.

Yes bluray has a lot to do to capture the entire mass market. The sales numbers on new releases is a very important metric for bluray. Most of he money studios make on dvd media is on the new releases. Accounting for 8% of that market IS a big deal to the people who make movies. Since dvd's can play up converted on standard BD hardware I'm not sure studios are expecting people to rebuy collections. They have even been reluctant to re release back catalog items. so you can not even re-buy your dvd collection on BD if you wanted to.

They do expect that as time moves forward people will buy new disks in a HD format. Given the small install base of HD players at this point this shows that while small in numbers HD player owners have a disproportionate influence on the profitable end of the market.

As time goes on it will only increase. I think that 2009 and the digital tv switch over will have a big effect on BD adoption as people switch over to new HDTV's. I have a feeling that you will see lots of $1-200 BD players selling to people buying new sets.

Joe

Comments on Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending March 30th, 2008

Jeebus H, talk about the truth hurts.

What a whiney bunch of sad-sack Blu-ray one-eyed fantw@ts.

Cry me a river girls.

Dry your eyes.

GFY.

Truth Teller

Comments on Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending March 30th, 2008

lets see if i can get this straight. who evers against you is pro blu ray. according to you this blog is populated by ps3 lovers. you calling me a bitch because i was aparently hiding and didnt call for a ban on you when they were getting at your fanatic ass. my man, you got problems. your feelings seem to be a little hurt and you think the whole world is conspiring to take you on or something. grow up. you replied to me calling me a ps3 fanboy, you reply to me calling me a bitch because:

Cos afterall you just can't bear anyone puncturing your delusions about Blu-ray now can you?

SD DVD sell 750+ million a year and Blu-ray has yet to even manage 15 million units in 2.

But you want to cling to BS like '8%'.

LMAO

you reall think im all that for blu ray do you. shit man you got problems. you got real, real, real problems.

Jove

Comments on Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending March 30th, 2008

Jeez but your weak little attempts at baiting are laughable.

Ditto your pathetic attempts to put words in my mouth (to suit your own obvious & ludicrously infantile agenda).

Go away you dreary little boring follower of Onan.

Go put on a PS3 game (assuming you have 1 or 2 you actually like) or a Blu-ray movie and start doing what you so obviously do best & so often.

Truth Teller

Comments on Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending March 30th, 2008

is there away to ban people from engadgethd??????????????????????????????
