and the fact, unlike us who got our ps3s first day they were out, the new systems cannot and will not play ps1 or ps2 games. UNlike ours where there was a patch released so that we could, my friend bought one and sony pretty much said tough shit. So who would spend 400+ on a system that isnt backwards compatiable. My friend went and got a wii instead
Who would buy a PS3 to play PS2 games? Backwards compatibility is the most ridiculous argument i've ever heard. If you have ps2 games, and they're that important to you, then keep your ps2 plugged in.
Not quite true. PS1 titles play on every PS3. PS2 backwards compatibility varies by model. 60Gb features full hardware BC, 80Gb features partial hardware BC (which is still extremely good), the 40Gb has no PS2 hardware at all. So at present there is no BC in the 40Gb model.
However it seems likely that Sony will want to sell PS2 titles as downloads at some point so it seems like that some form of BC will eventually appear. I doubt it will be comprehensive as the other models.
Anyway, if BC is important, get an 80Gb model while you still can. Otherwise hang onto your PS2.
I searched out and found a 60gb ps3 to play blu-rays, ps2 and ps3 games. I never owned a game system but wanted to be able to buy cheaper games (ps2) if I so choose. So JT- backwards compatability was important to me, so it must be to some others.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
