Now is a bad time to buy LCD based sets. Plasma is pretty much as good as it can ever get. The same for Lcos and DLP systems.
Lcd's are staring to get really good, at the high end. Unfortunately they also cost a lot. In the next two years or so you will see LCD's get good enough that you won't be tempted to ditch your mid level set.
Unless you pay over 4k your set is going to be out performed by a new $1500 tv in 2 years.
To use computers as a reference think of the 486 vs the Pentium and the pentium4 1.8 ghz vs the 2.3 ghz. There is a difference between all of them but the gap is MUCH smaller as of late.
My 47" LG LCD TV does everything that I need from an HDTV and more. Spare us the platitudes of which one is best and what's "as good as it can ever get."
What's best for each consumer is up to each consumer to decide, thankyouverymuch, Mr. Plasma Fanboy(TM).

All tvs at this point should do everything you want.
Quality wise LCD's have a number of significant of significant display enhancements that are starting to make their way down from the high end. Plasma doesn't have any such developments in the works. They may get better but not by much.
Unless you are going high end or don't care about picture quality it's best to wait for the 2008 or 2009 tv's.
My TV is 2 1/2 years old and was high quality for the time and isn't as good in terms of image as the new sets coming out.
