In order to use the advanced audio features of Blu-ray profiles 1.1 and 2.0, the player needs to decode and mix the audio within the player, and send the resulting output as uncompressed PCM over HDMI to your receiver. With this firmware update, he PS3 will now internally decode (and mix, if necessary) ALL possible audio formats of Blu-ray up to and including lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. You just can't ever get better audio handling in a Blu-ray player, period. See the link I posted above for more information.

It's unfortunate that there's still so much confusion on this topic, and receiver manufacturers are playing on it by implying that you have to have advanced audio decoding in the receiver, just as you used to need Dolby Digital decoding in a receiver to have a fully digital audio path. I guess it's because everyone assumes that since Blu-ray discs are the same form factor as DVD, that the audio is handled similarly, which is completely false.

That's what's great about the Internet and enthusiast sites like this--we can spread the truth!

Mr. E

Comments on PS3 firmware v2.30 walkthrough: DTS-HD MA support / new PS Store included

Ok, I rented Die Hard 4 and Fantastic Four:ROTSS (both is DTS-HD MA 5.1).
