TiVo's Blue Moon special: TiVo HD, lifetime service for $698

Yeah, TiVo's Blue Moon special has been alive for a few weeks now, but for those unaware, we figured it prudent to pass along the deal in case you're interested in grabbing hold. From now until June 16th, interested consumers can snatch up a TiVo HD DVR, TiVo Wireless Adapter, a lifetime of service on the unit and an incredibly amazing TiVo plush doll for $698. Yes, that's less than the original price of the Series3 alone. So there you have it -- at least you've got ample time to think it over before deciding either way.

I take it everyone is busy ordering their set, i wonder what is the catch, do you get to choose what box you want? if i was guaranteed a series 3 i wil go for 2 of them....Kinda sweet deal tho....Enjoy.

The MSRP of the TiVo HD is $299. Lifetime used to be $299 when it was still regularly offered, but it has been $399 since it resurfaced under specials, while $299 is for three years.

That's how I read it. Lifetime isn't really Lifetime. More like 3 years tops.

If a TiVo dies and you have it repaired by TiVo or an authorized service center they'll transfer the lifetime to a new box as required. And most things that fail, like the drive, are repairable by the user.

I'm currently enjoying my TiVo HD w/ lifetime (transferred from series 1), however, I'm getting more and more discouraged as TWC adds more HD channels that I can't get until tuning resolvers are born.

How long is a lifetime? It's not clear about that. Does that mean until the unit dies? Or a limited time regardless?

What it doesn't support is switched digital video (SDV). If your cable company is deploying SDV for the newer HD channels (I know Time Warner in upstate NY is), then the TivoHD cannot tune them, due to the lack of 2 way communication.

An SDV "Dongle" has been promised that will allegedly give the TivoHD this capability, however it has yet to be seen except in press release promises.

Of course Tivo Series 4 will have native SDV/2 way communication, if you have SDV in use in your locale then wait for this.
