Hawaii volcano film to be released on Blu-ray... and HD DVD?
There's simply no question that the beauty of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (above) can only truly be appreciated after a winding drive down from Kailua Kona (or Hilo, for those who love the rain), but for folks without weeks on end to spare waiting to see lava flow from some of those majestic creations, a forthcoming film should give you the next best look. Volcanographer Mick Kalber has assembled an hour-long movie entitled Kilauea's Flow to Waikupanaha, and while we'd generally brush something like this off, a recent writeup about it most definitely caught our eye. We thought we had already seen HD DVD's last hurrah back in March, but if KHNL-8 is to be believed, the forthcoming flick will be available on Blu-ray and HD DVD. Granted, there's no release date mentioned, but given that red has been decomposing for months now, we're tempted to believe someone was simply misinformed.

They could probably sell about 10k copies if they released it on HD DVD. Not people that are actually interested in the movie, but those that will buy anything on HD DVD just because it IS on HD DVD.
Uh, I'm interested in the movie, and I have an HDDVD player not an uber-expensive blu-ray player. I own about 15 HDDVD's, so I must not buy stuff just because it's on HDDVD.
There goes your half-brain theory.
I'm Mick Kalber, the producer of "VolcanoScapes Special Edition... Kilauea's Flow to Waikupanaha." And actually, although that program was shot in high definition on a Sony CineAlta HDCAM, it's initial release
will be on standard DVD only. We will release it later this summer on both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, just as we have recently for another title, "VolcanoScapes... Kilauea in High Definition." As both
Andy and WebDev511 have mentioned, there are a lot of folks out there with HD-DVD players who would like material to play on them and we'd
like to supply them with something great. Interestingly, even though HD-DVD has been declared dead in the water, our early sales between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray have been almost dead even. Go figgah! You can find out more information about our "VolcanoScapes" series of DVDs by visiting our website @ http://www.volcanoscapes.com/. BTW, the Waikupanaha show is an hour of slack key music and pictures of the current eruption... Kilauea in High Definition is 40 minutes of international music and pictures of the last four years of eruptive activity.
