Sun Microsystems's
pledge to aid the widespread development of interactive content on Blu-ray wasn't the only thing going down today at the JavaOne Conference in San Francisco. Rather surprisingly, famed musician Neil Young announced plans to "release his entire music archive on Blu-ray discs that can be updated over the internet." Reportedly, the first installment of Young's archive will cover 1963 to 1972 and will be released as a ten-disc set this fall on Reprise / Warner Bros. Records, and subsequent archives will be released chronologically and "include some previously unreleased songs, videos, handwritten manuscripts and other memorabilia." Stressing Blu-ray interactivity, it was also noted that fans could download more songs, photos and tour information via their internet-connected decks. Needless to say, we're pretty stoked about the whole ordeal, and can only hope that more artists follow suit in serving up their work via Blu-ray.

DVD-Audio never really took off.. What makes them think that BluRay Audio disc will.. Now if they did this with the Videos, then great.. But I dont see that happening..
Next time you may want to try to read the article. The discs include videos as well as other bonus features, and will play as full BD discs, not just audio discs.
Why would I want to watch this old tosser in HD when I don't want to watch him now?
young is one of the more important *artists* of the last half century, period. if you think he's dated, ask yourself why the great filmmaker jarmusch (another important american artist) would ask young to create the entire soundtrack for one of his films. sure, not everything he does is great. heck, i only have a couple of records but i respect the man and appreciate his music whenever i hear it. i think *you're* the old tosser, pal.

Now I actually have a reason to buy a blue ray player.
Neil has an amazing catalogue and to all of the people that are not familar with his music it is their lose.
Also these recordings represent when he was in his early twenties and his early thirties which was amazing period for him. Buffalo Springfield, CSNY and his solo material are awesome and the fact that a lot of people don't get him or understand his music is actually great, because the world is really full with a lot of ignoramus's that have no taste. When I went to his show his performance was great and even in his early sixties he still rocks. So much for being an old tosser.
DTS-MA or Dolby Tru-HD... lossless PCM? That'd be great thanks! Blu-Ray could be a TREMENDOUS format for audio releases... this is probably just a dream though. I'd love to listen to hi-fi recordings on blu-ray. Seems to be more practical than SACD (dsd issues, expensive players) or DVD-A (dead format)

Listen should be the key word. It's about the music. Can't say how much more practical Blu-Ray is than SACD. Expensive Blu-Ray players, more expensive discs, sounds like the same song.
I have never heard a TrueHD, DTS-Master audio or Dolby TrueHD music cd...anybody? So how would I know it's more practical or even better than
SACD?
DSD issues have been player related. You can buy amplifiers that support DSD via HDMI now (Yamaha RX-V663 for instance). Best deal on A DSD capable player..OPPO 980H DSD via HDMI $170.
So the only thing we are really missing is a Blu_Ray player that does what the OPPO 980H does plus the Blu-Ray side of it. Somebody needs to build me one of these so I can actually compare all the all the HD audio formats to SACD.
Know of any Artists that have a disc in all these formats?
OK, I haven't done the math.. but why 10 discs? Does Neil Young really have like half a Terabyte of content? Couldn't we just cram it all onto one disc? A Career on a Coaster, if you will?

Seriously, with every new technology that comes out we would be hoping that they can fit all on one disc. And again tonnes of double discs for films are coming out, 10 discs for this.
Surely he has a large catalogue, but it would be nice if there was a format that could fit a few TB's on one disc and eliminate the need for more and more discs.

Exactly as others said, where's DVDA and SACD? Blu-ray music CDs will never take off. Stick to concerts on Blu-ray.
Yes, the format war revisited where both lost due to poor studio support. BD may have a chance since it is "THE" high definition disk standard now :).
I hate to think what the 10 disc set is going to cost. It will probably only be affordable for hard core NY fans.

And how do you download songs? Do the players have presistant storage?
Not an issue for me since my Panny player doesn't have a network connection.

And I don't mean CDs ripped & saved in .flac.
I mean studio quality recordings delivered in .flac not converted to .flac from a lesser format as there is a difference.
