Xbox 360 HD DVD drive hits $19.99 in Canada
Although the €9.99 Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on over in Ireland is likely still the cheapest way to snag one from a retail location, that flight to Dublin is apt to offset any potential savings. Nevertheless, those in Canada can come awfully close to said deal by visiting FutureShop, which is currently offering the once-molten hot unit for a mere $19.99. Unfortunately, it seems sold out online, but you can certainly phone up your local B&M location and hope for the best.

With prices this low, HD-DVD is bound to make a comeback. Sony execs must be quivering in their seats.
It's been $12 in the US for about a week or two (at KMart)... why is this news?
Even if you only need an external CD/DVD drive that's still very cheap.
You can get the same functionality for cheaper with one of these:

Really? You can watch DVDs with your link? You can control your Xbox with your link? (the player comes with a multi-media remote for the 360). And it comes with King Kong, so for less than the price that it cost you to go to the movie to see King Kong, you can see it in your living room.
Dead format, sure, but for $20, it's a no-brainer.
Ok, that was pretty funny. Xyzzy just can't take a good joke.
Hahaha. Good one. Hey Xyzzy , get a life already! You lost!
Yes, but you can't play a fifty dollar box set of Harry Potter films with a bigfoot doorstop.
It was €10 in Ireland recently. I was looking to pick one up to install Ubuntu on an Eee PC laptop but they'd cleared out.
Great unit @ a great price.
So much for all those attempts at putting people off with scary tales of 'what happens to your HD DVD collection if you HD DVD player breaks down or is damaged'?
(like as if that was ever really likely to happen anyways.......I can honestly say I've never replaced a DVD player for any other reason other than upgrading)
Anyhoo, I had one of these units & sold it (before the plug was pulled & it made for a very inexpensive purchase 1st time around).
Knowing the blue/violet laser has a finite lifespan (how happy will all those PS3 owners be using it all up with both games & movies?) I have just bought another unit to put away.
It cost me (along with an HD DVD movie I was after = total cut the postage price) £20/$40 from Amazon Germany delivered.
There's 450 English/western world HD DVDs out there.
I'm filling my boots, now up to 60 movies+.
No need to rush into Blu-ray, certainly not at the prices they expect right now.
I just paid £15/$30 for the Matrix trilogy set, same cost for the Battlestar Galactica set too.
£4.50/$9 for 'Shaun of the Dead', 'Born of the 4th of July' & 'The Departed' although Pan's Labrinyth cost me a whole £8/$16 - including delivery.
I couldn't even get the DVDs for that.
I'm laughing, enjoying my high def & saving a packet with HD DVD.
There's no way any credible & comparable Blu-ray option would give me so much for so little.
The XBox 360 HD DVD add-on (which I will use as a PC ROM drive, as before) just ensures for peanuts that I will never have to worry about breakdowns or accidents leaving me stranded with discs I would otherwise not be able to play (although several of mine are combo imported discs).
Awww, good for you!
*pats Truth Teller on the head*
*Goes and watches a Bluray*
Yeah, except you didn't, did you Jnas?
You had to come in & make your lame & ridiculous little dig (cos you've b*gger-all to say about the facts here).
Awwww, good for you!
*pats Jnas on the head & laughs my proverbial off
psst........go on, admit it......you have just the 1 Blu-ray movie, it came 'free' with your PS3 & you're now sick to death of it.
"There's no way any credible & comparable Blu-ray option would give me so much for so little."
No, because Blu Ray is a living format and HD DVD isn't.
Where??
Aww, did i hurt little wittle Truth Tellers feelings? Does somebody need to call the waambulance?
Wanna HD-DVD to make the booboo go away?
*Gives Teller a copy of Bee movie*
Look bees! Pretty bees! Yaaay!
@ Jnas
Predictable.
Cue the sadly & all too usual over-inflated ego rating his/her impact way beyond anything sane.
You are kind of funny tho.
@ Mark
No Mark, the real issue is why not?
There's an excellent and large catalogue (450+) of classic movies to be had for buttons and the hardware to play it on is peanuts too.
Why the hell would anyone take a chance & pay the exorbitant prices the Blu-ray crowd want?
Particularly considering that Blu-ray is by no means assured of being anything but an equally dead format going nowhere but just taking longer to realise & fall over?
Why would people want HD-DVD now, since Blu-Ray was decided to be the winner months ago?
Let me guess, your from the Louisiana Bayou, right??
"Why would people want HD-DVD now, since Blu-Ray was decided to be the winner months ago?"
Some folks have chosen to deal with the death of their format with denial and an irrational hate towards blu-ray. There is nothing wrong with picking up a few firesale bargains, but pretending HD DVD has a future is pathetic.
No Mark, obviously you can't read.

LOL @ irony.
If only there was the slightest shred of irony.
Unlike too many posters here I do not in fact see myself as doing anything but expressing my views or opinions or sharing info as I know it.
You won't find me (again unlike others here) talking in such risible & self-absorbed terms of 'influencing people' or 'attempting to (as one poster put it a while back) to delay the format adoption rate'.
Fail.
$20, I'm all over this like white on rice!!
