No need for a question mark. LotR, Star Wars, The Godfather and the rest of the heavy hitters will all appear at some point. LotR would be great but I own all 3 extended editions on DVD so I don't see myself double dipping anytime soon. That is probably Warner's fear too. On top of that I wonder how much effort was put into the effects for the extended edition. They look ok on DVD, but would they stand up at a higher resolution? Could they even fit each 4 hour movie on one disk without compromising the sound or video quality? Would they hang onto LotR until the Hobbit is done, or slip a release in soon and some kind of super collectors edition later?
Considering that several 2 hr movies were put on HD DVD with extras and looked great, I'm sure they can fit the extended edition on one disc and put the extras on another disc. Return of the King is the questionable one with a 251 minute run time. But if you look at transformers, it was 144 minutes with extras on another disc (HD DVD guys correct me on any details since I don't own this disc). Thats 144min/30GB = 4.8min/GB. LotR:RofK would be 251min/50GB = 5.02min/GB. Not much difference there.
A lossless 7.1 soundtrack would eat into that space pretty significantly.
that's under the condition that Blu-Ray doesn't disappear by next year cause nobody is buying that crap...
another benefit of digital downloads.. it doesn't matter how big the movie is..there are no limitations in terms of space.
