Hauppauge HD-PVR now shipping

The wait has been long, but according to one particular fellow who pre-ordered a Hauppauge HD-PVR, these puppies are finally leaving the dock. Just yesterday, his credit card was at long last charged the $249 required to take one home, and according to company sales, 500 or so have already had shipping labels applied, with another 500 expected to ship before June 4th. We're hearing that the hold-up had something to do with a faulty power supply, but regardless of the cause, folks who've been waiting patiently can finally look forward to pushing patience aside.

Does this thing have a HDMI connector? How can it do content protected programming without a HDMI connector?

You can't record protected content over HDMI since it's HDCP all over it. You'd be able to capture unencrypted content (like your local stations), but if that's all you want, get the HDHomeRun instead.

The only way to get digital content to a PC is via the "analog hole". Hence the component inputs.

I just hooked mine up and now I can record all my HD programming on my PC's 640 GB hard drive (as opposed to the miniscuel 160GB drive in comcast's box). I aslo can stream my recordings anywhere in my house!!

No, it doesn't have a HDMI connector, just a component input. It's called the analog hole, otherwise known as the a. hole.

so you still have to connect this to your pc. does anyone make a stand-alone PVR these days that doesn't require a monthly fee and isn't an HTPC?

Agreed, what good is a HTPC?

(Other than being able to add space whenever you want, organize your media with whatever frontend you want, and burn movies to recover space)

Not to mention multi-room viewing.

If my providers DVR had larger hard drives (or at least the ability to add an external) and multi-room viewing, I'd stick with that. But for now HTPC is the only way to go if you want your recordings available in more than one room.

You'd think they'd figure out how let their boxes talk to each other.

Before we got HDTV we used a converted PC (running standard XP) and a Happauge PVR hardware using the SageTV software and were very happy.

I will have to read up on how this connects to the HD source because I miss having my recorded shows accessible to my PC.

Wondering if we will be able to ditch my time warner cable box. Their web site says combatible with any cable box that has component out. How about soon to be released boxes from 3rd parties?

It's just a component input, it should work fine with any device with component outputs.
