Corel's WinDVD nabs BD-R 1.1 and BD-RE 2.1 playback certification

Corel's not satisfied with simply snagging DTS-HD Master Audio certification for WinDVD 8; it's also trumpeting the ability of WinDVD to fully support BD-R 1.1 and BD-RE 2.1 recordable / re-recordable media. Reportedly, this certification proves that said application "has passed the stringent standards and guidelines set by the Blu-ray Disc Association to ensure the best possible user experience," but it's not like that spill really means anything to you. You can, however, now rest assured that WinDVD will be all BFF like with discs that use H.264 and VC-1 for encoding. Availability? OEMs can get it now, retail consumers will see it in early 2009.

This would be good except BD-R media is still hella expensive, and know one knows quite sure how to backup a blu-ray movie..

Slysoft makes backing up Blu or HD-Dvd simple. Simply use there easy to use utility Any-DVD to first decript any DRM or CSS embeds, then rip it to your hard drive, and finally burn the image onto the proper blank media and wallah, its backed up.

How is WinDVD Blu-ray playback compared to PowerDVD? I used PowerDVD when I have an HD DVD add-on hooked up to my pc and it was shit.

But for how long? I assume they have to licence HD DVD technology, either per device or on a subscription basis. And while the format is not changing, there is still a development cost associated with maintaining the code and testing it still works. At some point its simply not going to be worth bothering with it. They'll probably advise customers who want HD DVD playback to stick with an older version. Hopefully by that point, some tool like Videolan can be used instead.

I wouldn't imagine it would cost much money, or any money at all to support a dead technology. Pisses off consumers less, and keeps less people pissed off @ the companies that gave it to them.

I wish more devices supported OGM/MKV in general. It esp. stinks when the program/hardware you are using supports the audio/video codec inside the container but not the container itself =/. Gotta love subtitles too =).
