Other than it being a sweet looking ext. drive, a person can make one pretty easily. However, with the 8300HD receiver, I found it unstable to begin with. Missed recording or recording would be broken into more than one piece. Once I attached my own external drive, it became a lot more unstable with its recordings. Just my $0.02.
