NHK demonstrates 8K display: 16x more detail than 1080p
Looks like NHK brought a prototype 33 megapixel, 8K Super Hi-Vision projection system to the auditoriums of CommunicASIA. Using a pair of LCoS projectors, NHK threw 7,680 x 4,320 pixels illuminated at 8,000 lumens onto a screen measuring 6.6 x 3.7 meters. The images were recorded from a prototype 8K studio camera -- as good as it gets until the first live SHV television broadcasts are demonstrated in September.

Alright I am all for HD and high quality video and audio. But does the word "overkill" mean anything to anyone these days?
This just means screens can get bigger and not loose sharpness.
I have a 1080p projector with a 106" screen, and it's sharp as a tack. You'd need to go to 200"+ to see a big difference at 8k. Who has a wall big enough for that?
It kinda feels like 1080P is obsolete before it's really gone anywhere.
How long will 1080P be considered the Hi-Def standard?
I believe twenty years, minimum. As others have stated, higher than 1080p is just not necessary in the home. Super Hi-Vision might be able to find a place in commercial theaters, but the backers would have to convince content providers to invest in the equipment to record, edit, and project at that resolution. Not likely anytime in the near future.
Think about this: The Star Wars prequels were "filmed" digitally at 2k resolution (A.K.A. 1080p). If 1080p is enough resolution for a commercial theater, it's PLENTY for home.

2k is higher than 1080p

see the difference beween 1080 2k 4k
granted 2k isa higher end 1080p but still way more pixels. its a shame star wars was filmed using digital should have stayed with film, but hey its crazy lucas good thing speildberg didnt listen to lucas with indy 4, and went with film. even 4 -5k digital isnt on par with film yet sure its cheaper to use but no where near film quality
Mr E,
there is a big difference between 1920x1080 and 2048x1556.
If Hollywood could get away with 1920x1080 they could save a lot when it comes to BD mastering.
Sorry guys, but you're all very wrong. 2K is 2048x1080.

Wonder what type of super duper xtreme upscaler will be required to make DVD's look like 8K? Do you think you'll be able to see the difference?
Ha! you beat me to it.
But, I was going to ask the question to Nfinity, rather than just in general...
Can someone please fix contrast before they go off adding more pixels!
Yeah, we can keep the 1080p resolution, but I wouldn't mind seeing the following changes: More bit depth for the color space (4:4:4), and higher frame rate (48, 60, and 120 fps). Those two changes would provide much more benefit than higher resolution at this point.
NHK had a prototype camera set up at NAB in Vegas this past April, however they didn't have any native 8K displays and had to scale it down to 4K displays they did have.
I have a couple pictures of the camera they used in my NAB review (scroll down to the end of my post) if you're curious:

It wasn't nearly as impressive as the Red One theater, but maybe next year...
They've shown this the last three years at NAB in Vegas. Unbelievable quality. And 22.2 channel surround sound to boot.
They showed some video in '07 that they had shot at a US football game, and with that resolution, you could lock the camera on a wide shot centered on the 50, and watch the whole thing like you were in the stands.
From what I saw they split the image over multiple displays so It was still super high resolution not simply scaled down.
I wish I saw the red display.
I keep telling those kids to stay out of my basement theater
Why are people always bitching? Do you think really 1080p is as good as it should get, and the video technology should just stop where it is now? If they can make something better, let them do it. 1080p is not as good as video quality can be. If I look at a tv screen in 1080p, I can tell I am watching a television. Even though it's a scary thought, if tv's can get to the point that it is impossible to tell if you actually watching a tv, or looking through a window, that's where they can stop. That is the goal of this technology. It's not going to stop with 16k, it going much much bigger, trust me, as it should.
Wouldn't get be great to have 1 video shot of the world from outer space that is at such a high resolution that at first glance it just looks like you are looking at the world from space with your own eyes, but if you wanted to, you can literally point a telescope at the screen and look through it and you can see people walking around on the planet from space all on a tv screen? I think that would be amazing. If they stop now, nothing like that could ever be possible. And it's a very long way before anything like that could happen, that's probably 6,000,000,000k.
