Unless they have changed something in this most recent version of the camera, it records in a format that won't work with Final Cut Pro on the Mac without engaging in a time consuming conversion process. When I took it back I had to pay a restocking fee.

I ended up with a really cheap video camera from Amazon from a no-name company called Aiptek. That camera only cost $130 and records directly to an SD card. No moving parts. It recharges using a USB cable, and the files are accessible on the Mac without needing any special software or conversion process. I liked the $130 one so much, I bought the more expensive 1080p version. By more expensive, I mean $200. It doesn't have very good sound though, so I wish it had an external mic connection like the Everio. Still for $130, the thing is practically disposable.

Mike
www.thisistech.com

hivebrain

Comments on JVC Everio HD40 HD camcorder review

Like so many other poorly written reviews, I learned virtually nothing from yours. Like, how well does the auto-focus work, does it have optical image stabilization and does it work well, are there manual audio level controls and do those work well. Statements like "Audio capture was remarkably average, with nothing to complain about but nothing to get overly joyous about. " are way too ambiguous. It's like saying, "I guess I'm having a good day." And don't even bother wasting time mentioning still photo capabilities of digital camcorders. We REALLY aren't caring much about that.

I hope you will give the camera to someone else to do a more thorough review.

Tom

Comments on JVC Everio HD40 HD camcorder review

Sorry, but I'm in the camp that wouldn't buy a camcorder with poor video quality regardless of the fringe benefits. Just that the motion in the water tends to consume a lot of the bits, leading to decreased quality overall, so it might be difficult to tell.
The Samsung SC-HMX20C shots looked pretty over-exposed and soft on the whole.
I haven't seen a lot of great footage from this generation of camcorders--maybe it's the AVCHD, but the best prosumer stuff I've seen is from the older Canon HV20 HDV stuff (and I guess the HV30 is identical). Even the newer HF10 from Canon seems to have motion problems. Again, AVCHD is involved.
So, if this camera can record Mpeg-2 at 26 Mbps, why can't anybody make a camera that records HDV to a hard drive? Or is AVCHD better than I think it is?

farfisa

Comments on JVC Everio HD40 HD camcorder review

those quicktime files arent playing in latest media player classic home theatre or vlc player or powerdvd 8 deluxe.

What players are people using to play them with?

sam

Comments on JVC Everio HD40 HD camcorder review

Those QuickTime files are encoded in AIC, a codec that the Windows version of QuickTime has never been able to understand.
