I had a bad experience with one of these JVC Everio cameras. Unless they have changed something in this most recent version of the camera, it records in a format that won't work with Final Cut Pro on the Mac without engaging in a time consuming conversion process. When I took it back I had to pay a restocking fee.
I ended up with a really cheap video camera from Amazon from a no-name company called Aiptek. That camera only cost $130 and records directly to an SD card. No moving parts. It recharges using a USB cable, and the files are accessible on the Mac without needing any special software or conversion process. I liked the $130 one so much, I bought the more expensive 1080p version. By more expensive, I mean $200. It doesn't have very good sound though, so I wish it had an external mic connection like the Everio. Still for $130, the thing is practically disposable.
